This just shows that having children is easier than having chimps. Children try to earn their reward, chimps just take the treat whitout earning it.

Humans are much more complex than apes, by achieving the exact steps as tought previously, children are socialising in a much higher intelligence sphere with theirs teachers, it shows respect, trust and a tremendous hunger for learning more.
Now ask the child to find his own way through with the transparent box, I'm sure the result will be more surprising.

obviously our education system depends on this pattern: you hear something, you memorize it, then you give it back in a form of action or in words to the teacher
so the whole system makes you think less in a way, instead of teaching you how to use your mind

Those kids look american, thats hardly a fair representation:p
No I jest, but I do think that we over-coddle our young. Ours is a culture that orders take away, leaves sex education to schools, hire people to cut the grass/fix the computer etc. All to many of us are readily prepared to pass the buck when it comes to these things. We dont want to learn, we want to pay a guy to solve the problem and then get back to our own affairs.
Children are tought to do as they are told to make our lives easier. And of course, we punish them when they do things wrong. Unless they were told they could use the puzzle any way they wished, while that adult sat right beside them there is no way they would "cheat" for fear they would get into trouble.
You would be amazed at what kids truly commprehend when presented with a literal representation of a situation, its only when they encounter our metaphorical/sarcastic/idiosincratic way of phrasing things that a difficulty arises. Children dont just interact with the box, they are interacting with the adult also. They can clearly see how to get the sweet, but this adult who is sitting here has told them otherwise. They are processing two scenarios. one where they get a sweet and all is well, and one where they get a sweet slightly quicker but enrage the authority figure.
Leave the box in the playground seemingly unattended and see what happens.
