Needs lights on both sides or on a strip along the edges of the steps to keep shadows to minimum. So one doesn't hesitate mid step and fall/trip, thinking there was something solid there.

Lame.... it's one sensor that trips a pre-programmed sequence. If you stop after you pass the sensor the sequence will finish, leaving you in the dark.

For the non electronic guys....you could achieve this pretty simple with a homemade 7805 power supply, a picmicro chip, motion sensor, some leds, soldering iron, euro pcb, and a curious mind.
It's not that hard. Or...maybe it is...

Yeah the time when I'll need guidance to climb my own stairs is when I'm drunk, but then again the light won't cushion me falling down, most likely I'll end up with one of those light right at my face...and saying what was I thinking?

Don't know why people rave about LED lighting, it's actually quite shoit concerning QUALITY of light output, give me a tunsten lamp anytime of the day, preferably at night >:)
