I was sitting there thinking that it was completely fake until they turned it sideways.

Well played.

same effect as the 3D dinosaur in a previous optical illusion video, dont know how to locate the vid, snotr needs a search system, but never seen this one before, good find! ;)

No prob, what's impressive is that you uploaded atleast 100 videos without noticing the search function right next to it :P

#6 ..you would laugh how many vids lockandload submitted last months...i guess 300 wich 2/3 are duplicates..sometimes even 30 vid a day..most dupes or simply "youtube relates"..even a complete youtube channel or all new vivid videos..etc..

'desperate to get something published'

i wouldnt go that far sizzlik, i just find videos of interest..but thanks for the unnecessary comment, you must feel on top of the world :D

whats your problem anyway? is it you that has to go through the videos and separate the duplicates from the unseen ones? just enjoy the videos and chill :P

Does the black and white squares contribute to the illusion? Its hard to tell.

#9 Yes, probably to distract and also to enforce the geometry of the 'cube' on our brains. Also the red stripe is key to this illusion, looks like a present.

#9 The checked pattern is intended to introduce more fake parallax into the scene. If the cube were real, the squares furthest from your eyes would appear smaller than those closest to your eye. The way this effect works is:

a) the cube isn't really a cube, as you can see when it's shown from the side,
b) the squares that meet at the three-faced vertex are bigger than those on the two-faced vertexes which in turn are bigger than those on the one-faced corners. Even though these one-face corners (the vertexes where only one face of the "cube" is visible) are closer to your eye, the fact that the checks are smaller means your brain translates that to them as being further away.

Parallax is the apparent difference between near and distant objects when viewed from a different location. It's the fundamental way depth perception works - your eyes are a few inches apart and see different views. Distant objects are pretty much the same to both eyes. Near objects look very different.

I'd be interested to see if this effect is as realistic when viewed in true 3D - i.e. by a person sitting in front of the construction, not a camera...
