It is a Dutch "sport" folklore/tradition called Polsstokhoogspringen or Fierljeppen.

#2 you say redneck, but this 'sport' has been practised by Frysians for over a milennium. It was first used by farmers to leap small channels to get from field to field.
I have done this once, and it was fun and an excercise. Therefore it's a sport :-)

I understand that fast climbing and jumping properly is the key in doing this but to me it looks like the hardest part now is the landing. Looks like 5 or 6 meters (6 yards) of free fall into sandy ground. IMHO they should make the landing zone softer to get better records now.

Did you notice how close he still is to the current overall record holder?
He still holds the junior record since 2006...
