I think it just needs armored bumper like the one on old trains - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Uploco.jpg and not to stop after each crash >:)

Holy cow and sacred potato! Lots of drivers having stuffed their brains in the rear trunk - or left it home in a safe place!? But Houston is a very big city with 2.3 million inhabitants and nearly 6 million in the metropolitan area. So I guess these drivers just happend to get messed up with a "huge ass train", it could be another car, truck or citybus as well. The citytram in lots of cities around the world have their share of hits as well, but not as often as in Houston as it appears. Prolly have to do that in lots of cities people have learned to keep up the attention on whats goin on in the traffic around them.

Awesome videos, might teach people do start driving more carefully. I have noticed a big increase in unsafe drivers lately and I get tailgated for doing the speed limit on the freeway as if sitting on my ass is going to make me move faster. I just ignore and hope that I don't have to break suddenly.

Bloody hell, in Australia we've had these things called "trams" for about 80 years, rarely with collisions such as this. I think American drivers just need to open their eyes.

Usage of rearview mirrors and a bit observation by the DRIVERS would be just awesome :)

I think those drivers in the cars deserve to be hit by a train. bunch of idiots. they should ban them from driving for years.

I'd be curious to know what percentage of those drivers causing the accidents drove regularly in the city vs the ones that weren't used to the streets.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking that the majority are unfamiliar with the streets and probably trying to find their way and read street signs instead of noticing that GIANT METAL THING running them down.

Its not the train at fault here. Its obviously the drivers with zero control. These drivers where probably destined to be in a car crash. Better they hit the train than a buss filled with children or a soccer mob bringing home her kids. At least the injury hitting the train is self inflicted. The crash itself does not look that "bad" and i am pretty certain most if not all drivers survived the crash? Maybe someone knows better.

Two things. Stupid drivers and stupid metro design. Trains should used as subways and not street bus(train)-lines. And stupid drivers not looking around when they should

Picture of DoubleBubble19 achievements

What the fuck is with the geniuses blaming the Metro designers for the problem? Did you even watch the video or listen to it? It's caused by driver error. i.e. Fuckwits who shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel because they're too ignorant or stupid to see a fucking TRAIN in their mirrors. The Metro is not to blame. Idiots in cars are.

Hmmm...I guess I am the only person here that has actually ridden the Houston LRT and driven in downtown Houston.

I can confirm that the Houston LRT is a TERRIBLE design. (Furthermore the system doesn't go that far, it is only 12.1 km long.) While many of these crashes are related to "driver error", the Metro system is at fault for having a completely messed up and confusing LRT.

Everywhere else in the US/Canada (and the rest of Houston), when you want to make a left hand turn, you get into the far left lane and watch for a gap in the ONCOMING traffic. But here in downtown Houston over that 12.1 km of track, you expect the drivers to remember that to turn left they must be in the middle lane and watch for a gap in the oncoming traffic and also watch for a gap in the train coming FROM BEHIND THEM. It should come at no suprise that numerous people forget about and don't look for train coming from behind when they turn left.....because this is never taught in driver training NOR do they encounter this anywhere else in the US/Canada. What everybody is used to when they can turn left across a set of train tracks, is the tracks are fitted with signals and sometimes barricades.

Houston LRT === "Worst LRT Ever!!!!" <--- said in the comic book shop guy voice.

(Light/Heavy Rail Transit systems I've ridden: Vancouver Sky Train, Calgary LRT, Edmonton LRT, Houston LRT, Paris RER, London Metro, Holland Train/Tram/Bus, K.L. Train/Tram, Disney Land Monorail :D )

#25 Ok - you explain some, and it's amazing that its only 12.1 Km or 7.5 miles. But from the vid it appears lots of drivers are crossing or coming from oncoming traffic, and as it's said that some are driving against the red light. I've seen in lots of European cities same thing, they have to watch out for a tram comming from behind. And lots of drivers never got it from driving school to do that, but to pay attention not only to what's in the front of the car. I noticed the "butts" and the markings on the street and still it doesn't make people to be cautious. Got the impression that the drivers regards "it's a right to be mindless!". Have lived some years in the US and seen people crashing in to an intersection because they didn't see the red light and the crossing rush-hour traffic. Not to mention crossing the railroadtracks with flashing red lights and sounding bells and a heavy freighttrain sounding like a bunch of cruiseships having a choir with their foghorns. And still they do not care and sometimes get run over .... huh!? What happend? Why the pearlygates? .... :S

A lot of these accidents can be prevented if drivers LEARN how to SHOULDER check!

What #25 said... Its positioned very bad.. should be on the other side of the lanes. The problem with that would be that there had to be 1 on both sides to serve pedestrians on both sides...

So .. cut down the costs by putting in the middle.. aaaaaaaand...

this marvelous car safari begins..

In melbourne, the trams have the same sort of system. if you want to turn left. you get into your right lane (we drive on our left) and stop. when the lights go for the other traffic, you then make your turn and continue over the tracks. The trams generally always have right of way, You are not aloud to over take a tram, and you are not aloud to drive past on the lane next to the tram as people could be getting off. You need to stop when they stop and go when they go. I live in Tasmania and know how to drive with them, We don't even have trains in Tasmania! It isn't THAT hard to work out the system!

Being in a rush only slows you down!
