If I'm not mistaken, this is a Homing Pigeon race. They all have a tracking number and have to return to their initial position. The fastest wins.
Thanks to their extremely accurate "sense of navigation" (based on smells), they can return to their home base.

People race pigeons. #6 is right. I used to work for my friends grandad when I was a kid and we would do this almost every week. Their sense of direction is incredible!

I believe their sense of navigation is not based on smells but on the magnetic north.

#6 is WRONG! Birds cant smell! They navigate by the earths magnetic field and sun.

#6 & #20 are both kinda' correct since these birds navigate by smell sometimes and magnetic location and the sun other times.

They lived in an area without telephones or cellulars. They had to rely on homing pigeons.

As a child, my family helped out neighboring Vietnamese family, new to Canada. They returned the favor by giving us a few pigeons they caught in a highway underpass. It was a nice gesture, but after my brothers and I lost interest, they were messy and by parents wanted to get rid of them. We drove an hour away to the coast, let them go and said our tearful goodbye. On our drive home we reminisced about our fun times with the birds. When we arrived home, the pigeons were sitting on top of their cage waiting for us. :)
