I never realized it. I knew searches felt wrong from time to time but did not know that was happening. I love how TED teaches us so many things. And snotr for posting them.

Let me be the first to disagree with this speech! Yay! Sure, there is a risk of confirmation bias and being caught up in your own reality, however, with so much BS out there I'd rather be served content more relevant to my interests. What's the alternative- this "free internet"he describes? it's still filtered- just filtered the same way for everybody.

Who the fuck does Google searches with such vague search terms as "Egypt" ? No wonder your result is all fucked up.

#10 I agree its pretty stupid, but the point is that the results are differing greatly in topic and theme...
However.. the algorithms may be a bad thing, and the filter bubble is real - you can still look up ANYTHING YOU LIKE if you search properly and with interest. Not lazily clicking on feed links or major newspaper home pages - if something interests you, you can look it up. period. the real problem isnt the bubble in the web but in many peoples heads.
just my opinon of course. great vid as most TED that gets on here
oh and a quick edit: I have no google account whatsoever and share an IP with about 1500 other students of my university. the filter system is not working for me I guess - too much disturbance in the force when so many inputs from many different people are happening. opinions?

he isnt pointing out, that many of those filters making it way more comfortable for users to find information.
if you look up for terror, hunger you dont get facebook links of your friends or things like he is talking about. but you get pages, that you are used to. pages that you can read fast and fluidly. thats no bad thing.
if you are used to other pages, it shows you the information on them.
there is no "private" bubble.
its the one real problem here for me. while i agree, ppl need to think about the world, not only about their friends, he still tries to sell, that filters are ignoring content.
like his two friends and the egypt thing. they maybe have different links their, but if one of them travels a lot, its no bad thing, to provide tourist information first.
its his thing to look up "egypt politics" or "egypt news". not googles
