What a great advert! That Ad could be used for more than just cars! Global Warming perhaps.

?? What generates the electricity?????

Fuel burning power stations...!!!! Not to mention the energy used to make the cars and produce the batteries!!!

Until most country's get renewable energy like wind/solar/wave power electric cars are just propaganda and bullshit to allow governments to raise your taxes...!!!

Global cooling you mean ;), one of the biggest political (pseudo-scientifical) hoax along with CO2 bollocks. But there's just too much money involved, like it was with swine flu (glad my country didn't fall for it).

It is true that the video has a mixed message and isn't very well presented. The beginning seems to be making the point that the carbon footprint of our daily activities is bigger than we think - that most of the energy we use at home or work does come from burning something. It's easy to forget the fact, and driving an electric car would be equally deceptive.

I think the main benefit of electric cars is in fact urban air quality. Sure, the electricity is still coming from burning stuff but we'll be breathing less of the by-product. Maybe the same technology could be applied to the boats, submarines and snow-ploughs we will be driving to work in 100 years time.

#4 Global warming or not, there are greenhouse gases and its really easy to demonstrate the effects.

#2 Is right, altough there is loads of renewable energy in my country, we need coal plants to shut down the nuclear ones until there are advances and additions to the renewable sources. HOWEVER
arguing like #2 means noone every makes a start, everybody stays with the old stuff. its no "propaganda" its called slow change.

Aside from the fact that this is a car commercial it's a nice clip with a good point

#4 what the hell are you on about? Global cooling? Sounds like counter-propaganda to me, keeping people nicely in the dark just like the Man wants you to be

Climate change is no myth and the average mean temp of the world is rising.. forget about governments, this is actually REAL

#5 in the long run it doesn't matter where you're burning it as long you burn it.. Ultimately we only have one atmosphere, one ecosystem and everything in it is inter-related. Burning fossil fuels has to stop.. the smallest of the reasons being that it's causing utter havoc on the atmosphere.. Besides fuel running out, what are we going to use to build things?

Take a look around your room and try to spot how many things are made of plastic (oil) or have plastic as a component? What do you think can we substitute that with once oil is gone?

All the arguments about the greenhouse and co2 crap aside as this car still needs power made by 40-80% fossil fuels depending on were you live , Why are eco cars and electric cars always so bloody ugly ? are they made just for sad hippie type vegers that think drinking cow's milk is a crime and like the smell of there own farts.

Leaf....ffs

A gasoline powered car has less emition then an electric, as long as there are fossil fuel powered powerplants.
It just moves the polution.

I have 35 solar panels, enough to provide power for two homes producing 6,7 Megawatt a year I don't feel guilty when using my electric equipment at home. I hope my kids can breath in some fresh air the next 75 years.

Read some (either that article, or any other, most of all just read), also check your post, then think twice next time you say the word 'propaganda' ;), cause it sounds like you're already the tool of it.

Also, I've never said that climate change is myth, I only said that the CO2 being the cause, is. The fact that countries allover the world have to pay for it's emissions, what a joke.

1) Global climate is an immensely complex structure with virtually endless inter-related factors governing it and to rule out CO2 as a cause in the climate because recent studies show a vague negative correlation is absurd to say the least. Yes it's not the sole culprit but we definitely need to get it under control because growing concentrations threaten countless habitats and ecosystems. NO-particles and other greenhouse gases are as big a threat.

2) Global warming is a phrase used by the media and popular science to simplify climate change and its ecological basis and naturally there will always be people who will try to use that to their advantage but that's not my point.

3) My point is that at the preset stage we are too late to be debating over who is talking bullshit and who's trying to save the world. Mankind has had an immense negative effect on the Ecosphere, climate included and we need to start taking action now.

So you will pardon my somewhat overly aggressive response to your first post because for a moment there it seemed you were trying to debunk all our fears for the looming eco-crisis with a Washington Post article (a totally unbiased and independent publication I'm sure ;) )

People who think that climate change isn't under the influence of greenhouse gasses such as methanegas and CO2 never graduated in chemistry or even know anything about it. The atmosphere is made up out of different elements which all have different effects on the climate. Watermolecules and ice deflect light and help to keep the surface cooler, CO2 absorbs energy and methane does the same as CO2, just with a 20 times stronger effect.
CO2 always played a vital role in keeping the earth warm and it has done so for billions of years, the difference nowadays is that the balance is shifting due to the fact that we humans burn carbons which have been stored in the earth for millions of years. And by burning these carbonfuels we are disrupting the balance of gasses that make up our atmosfere.

Now the influence of the gas itself may be limited, but even a small rise in temperature means melting of ice, and less ice means less deflection of sunlight back into space. More energy being absorbed means more heat means a warmer earth.

And for those who claim that global warming is a lie because the last few winters were really cold and even the summer wasn't as hot as it was before, mind this: Look at the average readings (multiple years to decades) before opening your mouth and shouting something rediculous. The earth IS getting warmer over time, just not every day/month/year is hotter than the day/month/year before.

#13 thank you.. I typed an A4 worth of text only to discover snotr doesn't allow long comments anymore so had to make a short version in #12

Warming effects aside, CO2 also effects a lot of flora and fauna species as well as habitats like the conifers of tundra or the coral reefs, which extinction would mark a new era of obliteration for Earth..

As for electric cars - they are a farce, as are windmills and the like.. If our governments really wanted to make a difference they would start passing bills to compel car manufacturers to produce cars with a 20 year warranty or batteries that you could pass on to your children - we have the technology, corporate greed is just in way. The CO2 bill is not a bad idea, but the fact that corporations and governments can trade their quotas on a market makes it just another money-machine.

All this global warming talk is just a bunch of hot air.

#14 "CO2 also effects a lot of flora". Every green plant and tree on earth needs CO2 , so let's not cut back on it too much cuz I like trees. As a matter of fact planting trees does more good for the planet than all the horse-hocky GREEN ENERGY plans.

#17 that comment was about as informed as a toddler teaching an Olympic swimmer stroke techniques

.. *sigh* what I meant was naturally, that the change in CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere effects a lot of different flora species as all life has evolved to be tolerant of only certain levels of different indicators, with a rigid set maximum and minimum before it will start dying out.. And since evolution is a very time-consuming phenomenon most species can not adapt to the rises of various such indicators, CO2 being one of them, in time and start going extinct.

You are very wrong. There are only 2 heat sources for the earth. solar (external) and geothermal (internal). The sun does not change much but if it did or if gasses changed its effect, the following would result. A) water would evaporate faster cooling down the earth. B)More clouds would form cooling down the earth, and C)rain would increase cooling down the earth. If somehow you try to cool it the result would be A)less evaporation B)less cloud cover and C) less rain. All causing warming back to a stable temp. How ever if the heat rise were internal, say undersea volcanic activity, you would get the cooling from evaporation and the clouds blocking out the sun but the clouds would also hold in the heat but not shut out the heat source because it is internal.Nothing to do with the sun or its heat can raise the earths temp to any great amount short of the sun putting out much more heat. Its really very simple. And by the way CO2 is heavier the air so it DOES NOT collect in the upper atmosphere. It blows my mind that people fall for such a stupid falsehood and easily checked fact. I'm pretty sure you all have PC's. Why not research and see if CO2 floats in air. Reminds me of the first attempt at this hoax when they said there was a hole in the ozone layer.Ever try to drill a hole in a layer of gas?Had they said it getting thinner it would have at least sounded plausible,But a hole? Damn people will fall for anything. Use your heads people. Its really not that hard to see thru the BS.

A) How does water evaporating cool the earth?!?!? More vapor in the atmosphere equals more heat trapping in it, equals warmer climate..
B) Clouds are a representation of a high humidity, thus high water vapor content in the air.. Read point A above, to comprehend why this contradicts you.
C) Gibberish

A2, B2, C2 does not make any sense what so ever

CO2 is a part of the atmosphere, making up around 0,039% of it.. It doesn't float in the atmosphere, it's part of it!

The ozone layer talk is utter gibberish.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_depletion

The greenhouse effect is an indisputable fact of chemistry. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and you increase the temperature of the planet.

#20 has no clue about anything he/she wrote. With no greenhouse effect, the planet Venus would be slightly below the freezing point of water, simply because of its distance from the sun. But Venus has a huge amount of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere, and the actual temperature is above the melting point of lead.

Beyond that, it's worth pointing out that burning fuel is not a problem for the carbon dioxide balance. It's only burning fossil fuels that's a problem, since that releases carbon that had been sequestered in the ground. Anything else you burn will be releasing only carbon that was removed from the atmosphere during its creation.

So using electricity from solar and wind farms to crack water for hydrogen and drive methanol fuel cells backwards would provide a liquid fuel that be burned without impacting the carbon balance. The CO2 released was all taken from the atmosphere during production, so it's a zero net change.

What's hilariously ironic about this video is that more than 75%(correct me if I'm wrong) of the electricity produced in the US is dirty. Burn more coal to produce electricity to run clean cars. Great!
Picture of moskwiz36 achievements

As long as they keep building cars that don't last longer than 5-10 years it's a farce anyway because the ecological impact of the cars' engine is totally insignificant compared to the massive resources and pollution consumed in creating one, even if it runs on plutonium or squirrels..

Btw, #22 .. good points except for the only fossil fuels are bad bit. The atmosphere doesn't care where the increase in CO2 came from, it's all just CO2 and the reason there's so much of it, is because we're burning carbon so much. In a world with zero fossil fuels ever burned, you'd have a point, but right now we need to cut back on burning anything organic, fast!
