It was a good idea to put planks in front of the wheels, but so many weight is almost unstopable.
#(removed comment) There was someone inside, but the brakes failed
#(removed comment) there was a driver in it and was trying to dodge obstacles, the breaks failed so he couldnt stop it

no animals were injured during the making of this movie.
There was nothing they could really do, everyone is lucky those power lines didn't completly come down and kill someone.
Ok what I do not under stand is on the very front of that crane is a set of stabilizers , could he not have lowered the and used them as brake or was it total hydraulic failure ?
And also they could have try'd to throw one of those large blocks up in to the wheel arch and jam the wheel ?
It's a good job no one was hurt could have been so much worse too.

Why could the driver not start the engine (if it was not on) and put the engine in reverse??!

#13 You beat me to it,I thought the same thing. Maybe in Canada/Nova Scotia they just don't think very fast.

#13 I'm not a mechanic, but wouldn't that ruin the engine and make it burst into flames without really stopping the vehicle? It might have slowed it down temporarily but the hill goes down so it would have regained momentum very quickly.

I don't think you can lower the outriggers until the crane is stopped.
any gear would suffice
but im not sure if its an automatic or how it precisely works in that crane
Also the steering didn't fail so why the hell he started to count poles on his way down? I think the crane operator/driver might have been a noob.
One thing's certain though: it's easy to give advice and blame people in the vid from your chair back home after everything's already happened.

What if he had lowern those stabilizers?
I totally agree, they could have lowered the jack legs and braked the crane that way, certainly i'd have tried it. if i'd have been putting the wood under the wheels i certainly would NOT have kept hold of it! the crane is 35 tonnes, flat fingers? no thanks.
#9 and others.
The stabilizers can't be used when driving/moving. There are a couple of switches and electronics to prevent it.
And thing about the mechanic part. The breaks didn't work, we know that.
But most of the time when breaks from something like this are failing doing there work, there are more problems.
The breaking is done by hydraulic but the steering is too. So that can be the reason he is steering like a mad man. Maybe the hydraulic in total isn't working..
And putting it in reverse.. That is impossible when such a thing is moving. Not to think about the security to prevent it.
Anyway just my two cents.
We need to stop the crane, where is bird? erm no, where is the plane errr... where is SUPERMAN !!!

Idiots... they should have jammed the wood between the tire and body of the crane at 0:27 ... It would have stopped it because there was nowhere to go for the tire... it's like trying to lift yourself off the ground... ![]()
