"Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace." - Bill Hicks

Haha another great quote by Hawking... I really recommend you guys to read at least one of his books.. The Universe in a nutshell... or A Brief History of Time... you'll be smarter than you were before you read it I guarantee. 8-)

Lets not forget that theoretical physics is code for "best guess", he says that there was nothing before the big bang as there is nothing south of the south pole, there is absolutly no way of knowing this, so stop, stating this as if it is fact.
If anyone has a clue to what went on before then, please feel free to have a "theoretical" stab at it, it would be just as plausible as Mr Hawkins "theories".

Actually because the total energy of the universe is 0, it could have started from nothing. So probably there really was nothing before the big bang.

You can't form something from nothing.

#6 The big bang is basically an instability at quantum level. In quantum mechanics, due to vacuum energy, things pop into existence and annihilate each other (particle/anti-particle couples): that happens all the time, several million times just around and in you. The total energy is zero.

This instability which created the big bang (which explains why there always seems to be a bit more matter than anti-matter) created (at least) four dimensions: X,Y,Z of space and time. Before the big bang, there was no such thing as "time" itself. Hence, "before the big bang" makes no sense at all.

Take a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZVOU5bfHrM
