I would imagine that tank has one HUGE flywheel...when they get that going THEN they can start it........Just guessing though!

Seems very odd now, but I clearly remember the days when all cars had a cranking handle provided as a back-up way to start them.

Some WWII Aeroplanes were started this way as well. They're spinning up a flywheel type thing to build up potential energy and then engaging a clutch arrangement to turn the engine over enough for it to fire once or twice.

#10 That is a more clever way to start the engine than that used in old cars. Whereas in a car you had to apply force directly to the crankshaft, thus facing the difficulty of overcoming engine compression ratio to turn it (absolutely impossible with a huge tank engine), in the case of inertia starter (seen here) you just had to spin up the flywheel and it would do the rest.

#18 guess you have not been in the army, the camouflage is to prevent enemy from seeing them in distance, especially the aircraft.
And they are good for ambushing enemy, hit and run (engine will be normally off during such operation) ,
But for hand crank......erm..........btw... who built this tank?

#9, I don't know anything about that tank, but I guess there is no starter motor (at least not used in this case). Those guys were rather spinning up some flywheel to accumulate enough momentum to kick-start the engine - purely mechanical priciple of turning rotating the engine. According to the sound there is some really fast spinning heavy disc, which when connected to the engine (via some transmission) provides enough power for a few engine rotations sufficient to start it. However, some insider could provide more details.

The is a german tiger tank from world war two. It was literally a juggernaut. they tore through our tanks and were for the most part invulnerable. The big draw back was their huge fuel consumption and weight. there were many bridges they could not use and they sank like a rock in any kind of water so it was very hard for them to move freely around europe during the war. then there was the issue that when something broke towing them was a nightmare and by hand repairs were almost impossible due to the weight of the components. A testimony to their engineering is the fact that if fielded today they would still be considered a dangerous heavy tank.

it may have had an electric starter when new, but they must be hard to find now. the ones in the film kelly's heroes (outside the bank) started electrically.

So I guess they just towed the tank to a proper location and placed it there like a cannon. Lot of work to get it working...
