Don't get me wrong, I respect Neil deGrasse Tyson; but lately I think all he ever talks about is the days gone by and how mandating space research is the only way to inspire youth. Somehow it comes across as an old man's rant.

Love him though, and his ties...

#1

I think he believes in science, knowledge and research and emphasises those's priority in all situations especially above such things as politics, and election campaigns...

Got to the moon in the 1960s, can't get there in 2012. Built a 40 billion dollar space station that cost 120 billion dollars to do experiments that can be done without human presence. Looking for water on the moon when we don't have transportation to reach in order to mine minerals already present on earth.

Lets take our science and research resources and start solving real earth problems, real alternate sources of energy, wireless communication, wireless electricity transportation, rebuilding infrastructure, etc. I don't give a damn if it's .000001 percent of the national budget when we are facing a 14 trillion dollar deficit. Going broke with NASA unrealistic dreams that only produces propaganda is not practical nor beneficial to this country. Exploration of space should only be done if there is a real benefit to the taxpayers that are footing the bill and not for those who are being supported by the government.

I think #1 and #4 are not lisening to the man it gets everything moving. Not just the next best cell phone. 98% of all things done on a smart phone are dumb things. Like having your kid whatch TV or a moive on it so you dont have to talk to them or have them ask you big question WHY!

#4 Sure there's problems here but there always have been.
His point is that we have just that much less to look forward to.
You might not realize it.. but like he said in the 1960s we were at war.
Sure the money -could- have been spent towards that instead.
What happened is that the decision made actually had a positive outcome for decades to come.
People aspired to 'become something more'.
4 10ths of one percent. .4 of 1% .004 of one dollar over the course of 50 years...
What incredible things we -can- accomplish.
Then again.. would you rather we should maybe teach our children to keep their heads down and continue working for minimum wage and not dare to become anything more than what they are today.
We don't learn anything unless we try.

The meandering many will always persecute and ridicule the gifted few, i.e. people and smart people.

I'll let it out in the open. I am a Trekkie. I am with the whole star trek saga since capt Kirk till Archer. It is all science fiction but what the story based on and the essence it tried to tell is more than life itself. I do learn a great deal about us, as human race, and what we could become one day. To keep an open mind about the future, is one very powerful drive that most people lacks today, maybe some cleaver thinker like Dr Tyson will wake a couple people up and start looking into the future

Unless you explore you don't "discover"...if our ancestors hadn't explored the USA probably would not be the nation it is today. We NEED to go into space for many reasons......one of which is the continuing of the human race........Earth is just to small....We use resources that are abundant in space....we need to go get them......and we cant unless we .....EXPLORE !

I do undeniably respect Neil Tyson, and this is not the first time I have heard him talk about this, not on snotr alone.

But I find his opinion to be paranoid, and for my own amazement - form him - narrow.

I would answer with this video about that we are doing just fine.

Not even taking that I myself think every day - that we are doing very well for our advancement as a race.

Inspiring speech, what he says does make sense, but I really hope the future isn't space. Shouldn't we strive to take better care of the planet we live on instead of reaching out for the stars? That would be a better tomorrow.

#12 I do agree with you in the sense that we should first reform our ways, our economy, political and environmental institutions on Earth, to create some kind of a role-model for space-colonization - in other words we shouldn't look toward space and neglect the state of affairs on Earth.

However, I also believe that space-colonization would be a logical next step for a civilization such as ours.. we should just start from the inside - first make an actual Human Civilization and not take our childish quarrels and problems with us into space. If we can't evolve into a truly social species and remain clubbing each other to death with ever-bigger bludgeons, then there's no point in going to space.

More money are invested into making your hair fall less. that's a basic idea of where the world economy (not just the US) is heading to...

I'm not saying it is particularly bad, it's just there are no long term investments anymore.

In essence then, we all tend to agree on the fact that from the perspective of mankind, we are funding the most pointless things the most and all the departments that could actually reform the Earth are not getting anything close to enough attention =/

The Earth is not too small. We just have to change the way we live, and use resources wisely. The Future is in recycling and eco-society. Water which was once called an "infinite resource" isn't anymore. It is the Future to make it infinite again. And our everyday lives to make it less consuming. It is hard, but possible.

I never listen to a political statement with this soundtrack (cinematic orchestra - arrival of the birds), it clouds your judgment :D . There's even a clip on youtube with this song that makes a conservative republican candidate look like a visionary progressive politician :S

The technology developed in the sixties to reach space came from ballistic missile development by the armed forces not NASA. Technology would have continued for satellite and missile development. Getting man into space and the moon was for propaganda purposes to show the iron curtain counties the US's technology advancements. I'll concede that back then NASA could throw money at a project and achieve a result that benefited us, but not today.

NASA threw billions on developing a replacement for the shuttle and abandoned the project. Decided to go back to what they did in the sixties and do what the Russians have been doing, put it on a missile. Mars my ass, NASA cannot put a man on the moon today and that says it all.

Small world, I think not, 70 percent of this world is under the ocean and it's 99 percent unexplored.
