They use Carbide, a substance when added to water it creates Methane and Acetylene. the gas combusts when lighted and makes this nice bang, trowing the barrels into the air.

#21 - they are not russians, probably arabs.
When I was a child we used to do the same thing, but with cans, not with barrels. As #3 said this is carbide and water, a can, a stick with burning paper and that's it.
