Looks to me like the cliff is so low that a packed parachute would take too long to open.

I might be wrong, but wasn't BASE jumping first performed by people with folded up, non packed chutes that they would just hold in their hands?

OK, base jumping, clever or stupid? Certainly dangerous. How can we make it more dangerous? Let's try dangling the chute against a jagged rock wall and see if it catches. Well that worked, what next? I have a large umbrella, meet you up there in half an hour.
