great idea!

But am I right in assuming that in case of a minor fall or one where your head would be unaffected, the helmet/airbag would deploy? if so, then is it a one time use or can it be 'reloaded'?

Looks like a great idea. I don't wear a helmet when cycling but I would wear one of these.

That's a great idea! but too expensive, it costs 600$ and only works once. But considering the potential hospital bills, and you know, the risk of death, it might be a good investment.

I really like the idea, however I cannot see wearing a thick scarf around my neck in middle of the day in the heat. Winter cycling, it'd be great, but I'm afraid that in the heat of summer cycling you'd run a higher risk of heat exhaustion covering your upper body, neck and lower head.

600$ for one is not a huge consideration as long as you're not planning to actually need it on a regular basis!

In the netherlands 90% of population has a bike, 89% uses a bike. and almost no accidents between bikes and cars. Helmets are only used for kids, who occasionally fall. Some city centre are closed for cars. only taxi, bikes and busses allowed. If it was to be sold here, it should not cost more then $25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZXyDxd8ODY

I trade off a bulky helmet for a bulky neck scarf that costs far more than a typical helmet that I can only use once?

hmmm These girls may be on to something, but me personally, I'll stcik with a helmet for now.

10 million dollars invested.. i would have expected an actual force field around your head instead of an airbag in a scarf. however it is clever i suppose.

Great point!

I mean technology similar to this has already been deployed on sportbike racers. If they can find a way to make this affordable and reliable without having to buy replacement parts after each use it would be great! Also a way to ensure that the ballistics wont lose effectiveness overtime of non use afterall its not everday we get blindsided or rear ended on our bicycles, but if you take into account the amount of cyclists in China, India or anywhere it is definitely worth the effort...

Ok so does it detect sudden changes of movement around your head?
If so, what happens when this sudden velocity change is not there prior to contact? Such as, when your head is hit first, directly.

- Imagine travelling at constant speed in the city and you encounter a low balcony (I can think of 2, just one block from here that I always gotta look out for).. or anything that sticks out from walls etc.
- What about sharp objects?

For $600 I imagined a thin carbon-made something instead... that is light, can be pretty, not warm like a thick scarf, and resists sharp objects.

Anything that can reduce death and head injuries on a bike has got to be worth looking at. The obvious initial problem is price, but like all new products it would come down. Five years ago I paid a grand for a 42" LCD TV, today around £350 for a better one.
Hot around the collar isn't great, maybe they could install a fan and make it a cooling product as well. And/Or a flexible drink bag with a straw! that could also cool or heat.
The biggest obstacle is the one and gone problem. It needs to have a cheap refill facility (which of course would produce extra sales that could be calculated in to produce a cheaper start product) Give me the £10mill I'll sort it out.
My final worry would be idiot culture, if there were anyway at all that a false set off could be induced by one of our friendly hoodies or fellow der'ers it would flash around youtube quicker than sweat off monkeys arse and wearers would be not only looking out for cars running into them but yobs slapping them on the back of the neck....oops another £120.

What are the odds of you actually falling off your bike and land on your head? I've been riding a bicycle for over 20 years and it has never happened. If I were to fall i always end up landing with my *hands* first. What you really need to be using are proper gloves!

Probably higher chance to get mugged on the street than falling off your bike and landing on your head.

#19: Head injuries mostly occur in city when a cyclist gets run over by a car. Even at slow speeds hitting your head on the car or the pavement can be fatal.

Anyway, I think I'm going to stay with the traditional helmet. It only costs 20 euros and provides the same level of protection. I personally like wearing cycling gloves too - had my share of road rash as a kid
