Very nice, This could save a lot of lives if it became the standard I guess.
The detection has to be very precise tough.

This won't help children or smaler persons. Seems more like a system to prevent the engine and the windscreen from damage.

I think most accidents can be prevented by not giving everyone a driving license.

Cars are much much safer nowadays than they used to be, and even pedestrians are safer in impacts as a result of good design and engineering. Anything that improves safety further is a good thing - it could be any one of us, or our families, whose lives are saved by this new development.

What if a fat duck hits the windshield. Does it deploy too, to cause very bad damage? instead of a cracked window only.

Glad to see Volvo doing some market research; old people have much slower reaction times than do young people. 8-)

#1, only that people who should have licence are trained to hit the brakes. Great invention. At the very least, great intentions.

#1 i think the idea is that you should hit the breaks right after ( preferably before ) hitting the first pedestrian

What a total piece of crap technology. It probably adds a couple of grand to the car price and it looks like any front end collision would set it off.
Repair shop .. "we replaced your driver's side and passenger side airbags and installed new sensors plus the pedestrian airbag and sensors and of course the physical body damage. Your cost of repair is $14,738.22"

Why not a sensor to detect anyone within 10 foot of the car front that screams out a warning "JUMP NOW IDIOT"

I don't know, all the videos I've seen of people getting hit by cars they either bounce away from the car or fly over it.

#1 In case you haven't paid attention to the video, the airbag doesn't cover the entire windshield, genius!

#10: They are bad drivers, for sure, but they are also foolish pedestrians too. I have been very close to hit a drunken young man, a night in town. I was not driving too fast but he appeared, coming from a narrow street and stop at the very last millisecond. Would he had continued to walk across my way, I might have hurt him, or worse... We nearly never hit wild animals here, but accidents against other humans are very frequent.
Should we define a license to be a pedestrian, too?
Even this Volvo system isn't perfect, it will save lives, it's a good thing.

You will still probably get hit hard in the legs, but your head and torso will be more protected because of this system.
I still think traffic lights and crosswalks can be much more affective if people obeyed traffic laws and didn't text while driving.
Even better, implement a system that bashes drivers in the nuts if they hit a pedestrian. Darwinian laws at their finest >:)

#9 Its about reducing a pedestrians chance to be killed in higher speeds and that includes everyone. You Orangoutang.
