#9 my guess on the bleach is that the water they filled the bottles with is not sterile, so the bleach will prevent algae or bacteria from clouding up the water and getting the bottle dirty, which would obscure the light.
as for protecting the lid... perhaps they put some extra sealant under that film cap to make sure the water never evaporates out, and the normal original cap just wasn't good enough?

#16 It's not so bad, I have worn soft lenses for years, I use 2-week disposables, but I use them for one month.
You don't leave them in for weeks/months straight, you remove them every night and allow them to soak in solution.
Although, I know someone who would leave them in for a month straight, it seems like that could damage your cornea after a long period of time... has anyone seen any such studies?

#12 they hardly spend hundreds of millions. the granting mechanisms maybe pay them less than 1 million a year. it's not that much money really to support an entire lab full of people making 35-80k dollars a year, PLUS insurance benefits, PLUS buying all your lab supplies and equipment. not to mention the hassle of doing human studies. it's unfortunate that it costs so much, researchers wish it didn't but that's just how it is.
