No one in Europe talks about socialism or communism.
They just expect the governments to look after their people.
And that means a national health service, good schools, good working conditions and looking after the environment.
In Europe the governments look after the people.
In the USA the government looks after the corporations.
The results are evident.

In the US 16.5 million children go to bed hungry and 20% of community college students are experiencing “food insecurity.”
Corporate profits have never been higher, yet staggering amounts of poverty and near poverty remain along with stagnant wages.
Highly addictive pain killers are being foisted on the population destroying lives and whole communities.
Shit life syndrome has spread to whole states where hopelessness leads to widespread addiction and suicide.
Large urban food deserts where only fast or processed food is available exacerbating the obesity problem.
Corporate profits not used to invest in the companies or it's people.
7 trillion dollars in unproductive stock buybacks in the past decade.
An abysmal public education system that is down to 3rd world standards.
Vast criminal corporate activity yet enforcement budgets have been decreased.
Health care billing fraud at $350 billion a year.
A prison industrial complex which has corrupted the judicial system.
A for profit college system that has turned students into indebted slaves.
One third of 18-34 year olds living at home with parents and student debt rages out of control to $1.6 trillion.
Total US credit market debt now at $74.5 trillion.
The growing gap in retirement savings.
Half of American families have zero in retirement savings and most are worse off than they were in 2007.
A Record 95.5 Million Americans Not in the Labor Force.
One-third of Working Americans Supports the other two-thirds. (2018 figure).
35% of Americans have no money set aside for retirement at all.
Trump has turned the washington swamp into a Pacific size cesspit.
Trillions being spent on endless wars that most Americans know nothing about.
Why is the USA intent on destroying Yemen?
2 things have kept the US afloat.
The use of all means possible to enable US corporations to plunder the planet
The petrodollar. The US took control of the oil market and forced everyone on the planet to pay for oil in dollars.
That is why Saddam had to go - he was about to open an online bourse to sell Iraqi oil for Euros.
Absolute nightmare for Washington. With the dollar being reserve currency because of the petrodollar the US can just print money and run up vast deficits with no intention of ever paying them off.
That is why the US spends billions on climate change denial.
It is easy when a dilapidated education system produces a population illiterate in science.
When the petrodollar is gone things will get very ugly very fast in the USA.

So go ahead nomaddaf and Abdullah54,keep watching Sean Hannity and Dennis Prager warning you about all this terrible socialist stuff whilst 2 billionaires battle it out to see which one can buy the presidency.

The seeds were sown with Reaganomics and reinforced with Democrats Neo liberalism.
Give tax breaks to the rich and the wealth will trickle down.
It began when the Powell memo arrived in Reagan's desk in the Oval office.
The right wing think tank The Heritage Foundation got to work.
In time, it would spawn another 400 right wing think tanks all with the same goal - increasing corporate power.
(The US has 4% of the worlds population and 32% of the world's think tanks).
No single piece of legislation passed in the last 40 years has harmed US corporations.
Reagan diverting money from public education to the Pentagon (echoed by Trump) had terrible consequences for the next generations.
They figured they could patch it up by inventing the H1B visa whereby US corporations could scan the world stealing the best talent educated by other nations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK0Y9j_CGgM

US Corporations plunder the ideas of the world's brightest students in “competitions”.
Intel's “Science and Engineering Fair” and Google's “Science Fair” are examples.
The Republicans are in hoc to the big corporations Oil, Ag, Pharma etc.
The Democrats are in hoc to Wall St and big Tech.
Traditionally, Land (or assets) returned rent, Labor returned wages and Capital returned profits.
This social contract was broken with Reaganomics.
The massive productivity gains over the last 40 years were not shared equally.
All of it went to the top (Capital) and real wages have been falling.
That, coupled with massive increases in education and health costs means that many Americans who otherwise would have considered themselves middle class find themselves impoverished.
This is what first drew Elizabeth Warren into politics.
She could not figure out why Americans were getting poorer every year.
One huge blow to US democracy was Clinton's 1995 telecommunications act.
The selling of US media to private corporations finished what was left of real journalism in the US.
There are real journalists and commentators who have pointed out the rot in the system.
People like Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, Thom Hartmann. Lee Camp, Harry Belafonte etc.
But you won't find them on mainstream media.
You have to seek them out yourself.

That was 8 years ago. It has gotten much worse since then.
Trump printed $1.5 trillion out of thin air for his tax cuts.
Most of that went on tax cuts for corporations.
What did they do with this new-found pile of cash?
They bought back their own stock swelling the NASDAQ.
And who benefited? The wealthy who own the stock - all of Trump's billionaire friends.
The savings rate in the U.S. was 8.8% in 2012.
It fell to 6.5% by March 2019.
55 million Americans have no savings (2019 figure),

+6 26. RobertTusk commented 4 years ago on video Chaotic Pendulum

The disks on the floor are magnets all with the same polarity facing up.
The magnet on the pendulum has the opposite polarity facing up so they repel each other.
This trick works better if you conceal the base magnets with a stiff sheet of material.
The hard part is get the height of the pendulum magnet and the positioning of the base magnets exactly right to maximize the time of the "random" movement. The anchor point at the top must also be loose to allow slight upward movements of the pendulum.
In time, it will always stop in one spot - unless:

1. There is air flowing past the pendulum.
2. There are hidden electromagnets in the base or the tower which are pulsed intermittently to kick the pendulum.
(In which the base magnets also act as a distraction to the observer).
3. A permanent magnet is being moved in the base, or the tower or out of shot of the camera.
4. There are tiny movements induced in the hook supporting the pendulum.

Can anyone here figure another way to make it move indefinitely?

Australia's liberal party had a fine record in Government.
Sir Robert Menzies signed the Antarctic Treaty and established the CSIRO.
Malcolm Fraser rescued Fraser Island from sand miners.
Premier Sir Rupert Hamer’s (39th Premier of Victoria) impressive environment legacy included the Environment Protection Authority and creation of Melbourne’s famed green wedges.
Hamer not only founded the EPA, but gave Aboriginal communities ownership of their lands, abolished death penalty, decriminalized abortion and homosexuality, introduced anti-discrimination laws and rescued Melbourne's tram system.
Then along came John Howard (PM 1996-2007) who trashed a lot of the good work and turned against environmentalism.
The COP3 climate change conference was held in Kyoto in 1997.
90% of Australians were “concerned” or “very concerned” about global warming
But the big polluters (Mining) and US republicans got to Howard.
He used his “land use” credits con trick to get Australia out of reducing emissions.
For the US, Al Gore did fine work but the (GOP controlled) congress refused to ratify Kyoto.
Kyoto was to be the big one to finally get the world addressing the planet pollution issue.
But it was sabotaged by the 2 biggest per capita polluters - the US and Australia.
Australia behaves in the same manner at every climate conference.
The same countries block progress in tackling climate damage - the US, Australia, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
At COP25 in Madrid last month they were joined by Brazil's Bolsonaro who wants to clear the Amazon rain forest.
In Queensland, there are plans to open another huge (government subsidized) new coal mine to produce 60 million tonnes of coal a year, much of it "low quality, high ash". (Carmichael coal mine). Deutsche Bank and HSBC refused to fund the project because of the environmental carnage that would follow. Not just on land and in the air but also because of plans to dump dredge spoil in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Australia ships vast amounts of coal to China's power plants.
This year the current PM Scott Morrison blasted school kids for organizing protests for climate action.
In the midst of the country's climate chaos, Morrison seeks normalise environmental catastrophe and jets off to Hawaii on vacation.
So while Australians watch the world's largest coral reef dying off their shore, endured a decade of droughts, massive fish kills, the country burning, record high temperatures, intense cyclones, vast flooding, and loss on mangroves, their government is relentlessly sabotaging the world's attempt to save itself.
Here is a ranking of how countries are doing.

#9 Amazing foxy you actually looked up some science, there is hope for you yet. The surface temperature of Venus will vary depending on whether you are poles or the equator, daytime or nighttime, but we are agreed that it is hotter than your oven.
You would not like it there.
Most of the Earths CO2 did indeed come from its volcanoes (along with a lot of other gases). Venus has more volcanoes than any other planet in our solar system - hence the extra CO2 there.

Wallace Smith Broecker did indeed do scientific work on the climate, but he was one of many scientists.
Physicist John Tyndall is commonly credited with discovering the greenhouse effect, which underpins the science of climate change. Starting in 1859, he published a series of studies on the way greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide trapped heat in the Earth's atmosphere.
In the 1960's, Exxon researchers were concerned internally about the problem of greenhouse gases.
In the 1970s everyone internally in Exxon knew it.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/exxon-knew-about-climate-change-almost-40-years-ago/
Since then, Exxon has spent more than $30 million on think tanks that promote climate denial.
“There’s even a quote in it that says something like ‘Victory will be achieved when the average person is uncertain about climate science.’
The granddaddy of think tanks paid to push out lies was heartland institute.
The heartland institute is an ultra right wing think tank that pimps itself out to the worst US Industries.
The nickname for this institute is "The Merchants of Doubt"
They specialize in FUD (sowing Fear Uncertainty and Doubt)
It was the leading propagandist for the tobacco claiming there was no link between smoking and lung cancer.
Working for Phillip Morris, Brown and Williamson etc
It has waged war on the FDA and the EPA for decades.
In 2008, the Institute made up and published a list purporting to identify "500 Scientists with Documented Doubts of Man-Made Global Warming Scares". When those scientists asked to have their names removes from the list the institute's then president, Joseph Bast, argued that the scientists "have no right—legally or ethically—to demand that their names be removed" from Heartland's list.
It is a despicable "Gun for hire" for the worst corporations operating in the US.

#5 Don't be childish fox.
The CO2 in Venus' atmosphere came from its volcanoes.
The laws of physics apply to all planets.
The more CO2 in the atmosphere, the hotter it gets.
Average temp on the surface of Venus is 450 °C, that is hotter than your oven fox.
Mars was too small so its gravity could not hold onto its atmosphere forever.
Being small, its iron center has already solidified so it has no magnetic first to deflect the Solar wind which speeds up its loss of atmosphere.
Average surface temperature on Mars today is −63 °C ( −81 °F).
By the way David Koch died, so he is no longer funding the climate change denier industry.

Americans are still the biggest polluters - the same as in the 20th century.
China's per capita's carbon footprint at 6.57t is less than half that of the US (14.95t).
(That is despite much of the west's heavy and dirty industries having been exported to China).
Do you think you should have a special allowance to pollute more than twice as much as a Chinese person?

Ref the request to build those coal plants.
The government has not granted that request.

Then you have a throwaway statement "(who wouldn't love a country that kills 40,000+ Americans a year)"
And your very next statement is "Stats without context are useless"
Have you any idea how ironic that is?

I have to ask why they are not working on Thorium instead of filthy Uranium.
Thorium in very plentiful on Earth and is easy to extract.
One tonne of Thorium delivers the same amount of energy as 250 tonnes of Uranium.
There is estimated to be enough Thorium on the planet to last 10,000 years.
China has 2 Thorium plants coming online next year.
One solid fuel and one liquid salt.
These are small modular units.
https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2018/08/china-has-multi-billion-projects-developing-liquid-and-solid-fuel-molten-salt-reactors.html
Remember Obama's 2010 state of the union address where he got a standing ovation from both sides of the house when he said he was going to resume nuclear power production.
How is that doing 9 years later?
The US has 2 nuclear power stations under construction - both so mired in corruption and incompetence that they will likely never be completed.
(Mentioned in the video the Vogtle power plant in Georgia and the South Carolina Gas and Electric and Santee Cooper plant).
But China is investing in every aspect of Nuclear power.
20 Uranium plants under construction in 2019 and according to MIT they have construction time down to 60 months.
Aside from its own mainline nuclear design (Hualong type) and SMR (Nimble Dragon type) nuclear plants,
China is hedging its bets by building foreign designs.
They built Taishan 1 which is an EPR (European Pressure Reactor) style reactor.
It came online June 29 last year.
Taishan 2 (also EPR) is scheduled to come online this year.
It is also building a demonstration fast breeder reactor.
This is the CFR-600, a sodium-cooled pool-type fast-neutron nuclear reactor on Changbiao Island in Fujian province.
At Yangjiang an AP1000 (Westinghouse design) type is under construction but has had problems.
(This is the same type being built in South Carolina and the one that broke Westinghouse).
But all the plants under construction now were begun more than 3 years ago.
No new one has broken ground in the meantime.
Attention has now switched to experimental designs to keep reasonable costs and maintain safety.
The sodium-cooled reactor completed near Beijing in 2011 still has problems with its coolant systems.
20 high-temperature gas-cooled reactors were planned for Shidao Bay in Shandong Province.
But the first 2 have way overrun in costs so the other 18 were cancelled.
So nuclear fission power is still struggling to succeed in China.

Nuclear fusion power.
The most advanced fusion reactor on the planet today is China's EAST project.
(Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak).
Not content with that, it's next fusion project (CFETR) has already been approved.

#9 You are right ughlah.
Business is a main driver of immigration.
And that is for several reasons but mainly because it provides a large pool of cheap labor to compete for jobs.
While Germany and the Nordic countries aim for prosperity through better products and services and elevating standards of living
Britain has an entrenched idea of cost-cutting for economic advantage.
Once out of the EU the UK can water down all workers protections in a race to the bottom.
Once again the biggest losers will be the poorest in society.
The sad thing is a lot of these poorest people voted for Brexit.
Johnson will say the UK has the highest level of employment ever.
That is true, But they are crap jobs with zero hours contracts, no security of employment, no paid vacation, no pensions
and no way out of the poverty trap even holding multiple zero hour contracts. Current population of the UK, 67 million. Official number of people in poverty is over 14 million, 4 million of them children and the highest rate of child obesity in Europe. The obesity is caused by lack of access to good quality food. From a report on childhood obesity in Europe: "However, recent data from the UK are of particular concern since they demonstrate an excess of overweight (19%) and obesity (7%) in 5-year-olds and highlight the need to initiate effective preventive measures even before children reach school age".

#6 Yes there has been a rise in foreign born living in the UK in the last 20 years.
Tony Blair opened the door totally to East European workers. (unlike Germany France Italy etc).
Since then nearly 4 million have made the move from eastern European countries.
These are mostly young well-educated people.
They are almost all white Caucasian and if they have a religion it is a Christian one.
Douglas Murray and his so called "Centre for Social Cohesion" uses immigration figures to demonize Muslims.
He is an enabler for right wing activists and extremists piggybacking on the Brexit fracture in Britain.
In the 3 1/2 years since the referendum, Britain has become a hateful place with steep rises in all forms of hate crime.
The likes of Murray continuously stir up trouble and provide a platform for hate speech.

+1 54. RobertTusk commented 4 years ago on video Top 20 Countries Generating The Most Nuclear Energy

The world stopped building nuclear stations 3 decades ago (switched to cheap gas).
We lack the skills now to build them now.
The accidents at Fukushima, 3 Mile Island, Chernobyl and Windscale now means that with new projects, the level of safety has to be raised significantly.
Also there is a tendency now to make much bigger plants to leverage economies of scale.
These 3 factors:
The lack of skills and experience.
The increased safety standards
The temptation to build giant plants
means that the real time costs of building a Uranium plant today is 3 times what it was 30 years ago.
What is the state of nuclear power plant construction around the world now?
Let's take the USA.
Remember Obama's 2010 state of the union where he got a standing ovation from both sides of the house when he said he was going to resume nuclear power production.
9 years later how are we doing?
After 3 decades without building nuclear plants, civilian nuclear skills are somewhat lacking.
The military hoovered up much of the nuclear talent over that period.

The US has 2 new Nuclear power plant builds underway, one in Georgia and one South Carolina.
Both however, are riddled with scandal, vast cost overruns and incompetence.

The Vogtle power plant in Georgia is way behind schedule, over budget and wracked by lawsuits.
Along with cost issues, there seems a serious problem with long delays acquiring skilled workers from abroad.
It may never be completed.
https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news/2019/10/30/lawsuit-challenging-decision-to-finish-plant.html

The South Carolina Gas and Electric and Santee Cooper plant is a total fiasco and will likely be abandoned after $9 billion has been squandered on it.

Misguided politics are shutting existing nuclear plants.

Arguably, Richard Mulhouse Nixon's biggest crime wasn't Watergate.
It was the shutting down of the molten salt Thorium power plant in Oak Ridge Tennessee in 1971 thus sending the planet down the path of filthy, dangerous and scarce Uranium as the fuel for Nuclear power.
Thorium plants have cheap clean fuel and are safe, but were no good for making Plutonium fuel for nuclear bombs).
So why not go with Thorium?
Thorium in very plentiful on Earth and is easy to extract.
One tonne of Thorium delivers the same amount of energy as 250 tonnes of Uranium.
There is estimated to be enough Thorium on the planet to last 10,000 years.
Thorium LFTRs (Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor) run at normal atmospheric pressure instead of 150 to 160 times atmospheric pressure currently needed for Uranium water cooled reactors.
Thorium is much less radioactive than Uranium.
Downside to Thorium:

1. It produces no fissile material for old style nuclear bombs.

2. The current nuclear incumbents have built the market on Uranium and will fight Thorium tooth and nail to preserve their market and profits

3. There is not yet a Thorium power station in full production to demonstrate its viability.

#10 I agree with you fox. 17.4 million British citizens who voted to Leave the EU, are mainly ordinary folk who wanted their voice heard and their concerns dealt with.
They had had nearly 10 years of austerity perpetuated by their own government.
It was fairly brutal for a lot of people.
Why was it necessary?
Well after the financial fraud and crash, the banks had to be bailed out.
The bankers were rewarded for their fraud and the bill was sent to the poorest in the land in the form of austerity.
Of course they were pissed with their situation.
Then you have sh1t stirrers like Farrage and Johnston saying it is all the fault of Europe.
And Mercer bombarding 3 million Facebook users with targeted messages disguised as "news" courtesy of Cambridge Analytica.

#4 You can trust user "thefox" to bring a hate angle wherever he can.
Germany.
The criminal war on Iraq that sent it back to the stone age and stole its oil had huge unintended consequences.
One was flooding Syria with half a million Iraqi refugees and militia.
Combined with bankrupted Syrian farmers after 5 years of drought turning up in the capital Damascus it totally destabilized Syria.
The ensuing civil war and interference from world powers destroyed the country resulting in 1 million Syrian turning up at the door step if Europe, Germany (which did not take part in the destruction of Iraq) took them in.
What did Germany get?
Syria had one of the best educated populations in the middle east.
(Syrian president Assad was an eye doctor in London before becoming president).
Most of those that mead it to Germany were young and educated.
Germany has a demographic problem - an aging population and low reproductive rate.
1 million young educated and willing workers were a huge boost to the economy.
There is a lot of state support for raising children in Germany but it still costs parents about 160,000 to raise a child to age 18.
It is true that remnants of old style NAZI's used this new population to revive their ideas and continually try to stir up trouble.
Today the call themselves Die Alternative für Deutschland.

Britain. Well Britain is in deep trouble.

4 years ago the Prime Minister of Britain David Cameron decided to have a referendum of the people to decide whether Britain should remain in the EU.
The ONLY reason he needed to do this was in his Tory party there was a rump of politicians who whew agitating for it and causing Cameron loss of support for him in his own party.
These tensions plagued the Tory party for decades and threatened to destroy the party.
Some nefarious forces saw their chance to exploit this situation.
A racist white stockbroker and failed politician called Nigel Farage self selected himself and played the race card.
He set up the Brexit Party. 22 of Britain's 55 prime ministers came through 1 Charter school - Eton.
Cameron is one of them.
Imagine a man born in New York with bad hair, whose privileged upbringing has given him a sense of entitlement and an accompanying carapace of invulnerability, who is a narcissistic womanizer, an inveterate liar and who leaves a trail of chaos behind him for others to clean up.
That is Boris Johnson.
The membership of the Tory party (fewer than 150,000 elderly privileged rich white men) elected him as leader of the Tory party and by default Prime minister of the country.
He also played the race card.
Corporate billionaires also backed the leave vote.
Leaving would mean rolling back all the European workers rights and environmental protections.
Robert Mercer with Cambridge Analytica and Steve Bannon (Breitbart) turned up in London.
Mercer using Cambridge Analytica bombarding Britain's Facebook users with fake Brexit articles posing as real news.
This was a dry run for interfering with the US presidential election later that same year.
This brought a narrow Brexit victory which no one really expected.
Britain voted to burn down it's own house.
It has been catastrophic for the country.
3 and a half years of virtual civil war with family members arguing over it.
No other government business in that time
Those politicians trying to save the country are being driven out.
All because of unscrupulous people whipping up anti emigrant hysteria
For the record, Britain's immigrants for the last 10 years are mainly fairly well-educated young white Caucasians from Eastern Europe.

Subsequently, the FBI announced that the group was implicated in a plot to assassinate George Soros, Barack Obama, and Hilary Clinton.
The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the UCP as a hate group.
The UCP name became so toxic it had been rebranded as the Guardian Patriots.
Geroge Cudahy who stars in the video supports Steve Pearce - chair of New Mexico’s Republican Party.
Pearce pushed the birther conspiracy and has called the theory of global warming “crap.”
Another quote from genius Pearce:

We Build the Wall is supported by the likes of Steve Bannon, Kris Kobach, and Tom Tancredo.

6. 24/7 access to either a DHS or DOD jet. Czar must be on the border every week.
7. Ability to spend weekends in KS with family on way from border back to DC, unless POTUS needs Czar elsewhere.
8. Security detail if deemed necessary after security review.
9. Serve as the face of Trump immigration policy - the principal spokesman on television and in the media.

Please check your facts before committing them to print.
The Paris accord was an attempt to LIMIT the global temperature rise to 2.0 degrees C not 0.02C.
Ideally we would keep it the same as today but it is too late to achieve that so it is damage limitation mode not problem resolution. It was deemed too late to keep it to 1.5C, so you can kiss the coral reefs goodbye.
Against the odds, the world did come to an agreement.
Some time later Mercer puts trump into the white house, and the petulant trump throws a series of hissy fits.

What exactly do you recall about US emissions?
You say USA produces 22% of the worlds CO2 pollution.
Well, the USA is only 4.4% of the world's population.
So what does that tell you?
(Curiously the US also has 25% of the world's prison population).
Some perspective as regards US pollution.
Like in the 20th century, Americans are still the biggest polluters.
(of bigger countries - little oil states like Bahrain and Kuwait are worse than America).
The per capita carbon footprint of China is 6.57 tons.
The per capita carbon footprint of USA is 14.95 tons.
That is despite much of the west's heavy industry moving to China.

Being religious is accepting views or beliefs without question however irrational.
Being rational is rigorously questioning all the facts before coming to a conclusion.
27 years ago, the world made an attempt to stop the rampant polluting of our planet and came together in Kyoto Japan.
The result was Kyoto Protocol treaty on Climate Change.
The United States refused to ratify it. (Still hasn't today).
Furthermore, the G.H.Bush (oilman) administration put extreme pressure on other countries around the world not to ratify it.

In the 2016 presidential campaign, 16 republican candidates were all climate change deniers.

Usually they were indoctrinated into religion when they were children.

In most open western societies as the kids grow up they figure out for themselves what is true and what is nonsense.

+6 111. RobertTusk commented 5 years ago on video When Gorgons Ruled the Earth

There were 6 major extinction events with different initial causes but the P-T and the K-T extinctions were real the biggies.
The "Great Dying" extinction event 250 million years at the end of the Permian period was caused by a huge increase in geologic activity mainly volcanoes and earthquakes leading to massive climate change.
That was the Permian–Triassic (P–T) extinction event
Methane released from the sea floor got into the atmosphere and the greenhouse effect did the rest.
That saw 70% of terrestrial species and 96% of all marine species on Earth wiped out.
That did it for the Gorgonopsids.
But over millions of years the survivors recovered and there was room for the dinosaurs who ran the show for the next 185 million years.

Then 66 million years ago a big rock went splat into Yucatan Mexico.
That was a bad day for everyone.
Debris in the atmosphere led to catastrophic climate change.
And that caused the Cretaceous–Tertiary (K–T) mass extinction where 75% of species were lost.
That did for the dinosaurs.
But it made way for the mammals who have had is their way since.
And that was fine for 65 million years,

Then about 1 million years ago several species of humans emerged.
Some left Africa and adapted to other tough environments.
But by about 40,000 years ago only one remained - the homo sapien.
The homo sapien was particularly bad for large herbivore mega fauna such as mammoths.
10,000 years ago that species developed agriculture,
That let to large organized societies and freedom from the tyranny of struggling to find food every day.
This allowed the species to thrive and infect every habitable space on the planet.
Widespread habitat destruction ensued.
Then it came up with the idea of burning fossil fuels putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere
The combination of massive habitat destruction and degraded atmosphere kicked off the next mass extinction - the Holocene extinction.
Or as it is more commonly known the Anthropocene extinction.
The current rate of extinction of species is estimated at 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural background rates.
Will this one do for us?

Thefox, it seems you didn't watch the Tony Seba video in comment 7.
Anyway we are talking China here,
If you can always have a car within 2 minutes for 1/20th the cost of owning one, it is a no brainer,
China now has 125 cities bigger than San Francisco.
Most folks live in apartment blocks with no car parking space.
You can't consider buying a car if you have no place to park it.
Late 2017 the government granted licenses for several companies to run autonomous cars on the roads of the capital Beijing.
The biggest, Baidu clocked up 87,000 autonomous miles on Beijing's roads in 2018.
The biggest ride hail company Didi (far bigger than Uber) is also running autonomous cars and the plan is ride hailing without drivers.
European cities are also pushing ride hailing.
If you want to drive your own diesel car into London it will cost you £24 per day. (that's $31.50).
A gas car is about $15 per day.

The island of Hainan (China's Hawaii) will be the first to go all electric and autonomous in earnest will start there.
As for the US.
Half of American families have less than $1,000 in savings.
Being unable to afford to repair a broken car can mean losing a job.
Access to personal transport without fuel, insurance, maintenance, plates depreciation and auto finance debt costs is very attractive.
Heck you don't even need a driving license.
The market will drive this change.
It will be slower in the US because of the lack of 5G coverage but it can still be done on 4G.
I urge you to watch Tony's video to see how this will pan out in the US.

Yup snotraddict,
China is going to have screw ups along the way some of them big ones.
Bringing 1,420 million people from a mainly agrarian society to a first world one in lifetime is unprecedented in human history.
China can learn from mistakes made in other countries but will also have to learn from it's own mistakes.
That was the subject of the link I put in comment #2

As regards fawning over car sharing.
On average cars are parked 95% of the time.

http://fortune.com/2016/03/13/cars-parked-95-percent-of-time/

For private cars the % is even higher.
On average, in the west, folks spend up to one third of their income on a depreciating asset they use 5% of the time.
That does not make sense.
Take your own town for example - LA.
One third of LA space is occupied by car traffic resources be it highways, parking facilities etc.
Imagine if much of that could be turned over to housing.
China cannot ever offer its people 2 cars per household nor does it need to.
It now has the most advanced and extensive public transport system in the world.
But that is not enough.
It wants to be the first country to develop and deploy TAAS on a vast scale. (Transport As A Service).
When you need a car, an autonomous electric vehicle turns up.
At your destination you step out and walk away and the car goes to service another request.
Electric cars with 18 moving parts (as opposed 2,200 is a combustion engine) are good for 500,000 miles.
In constant use they should last 5 years just by replacing the tires.
You will still be allowed to drive a private internal combustion engine (ICE) car but it will be very very expensive.
At March 2018 monthly sale in Shanghai, around 217,000 bidders battled for ICE 9,855 license plates.
The average winning bid was 88,176 yuan ($14,022).
Plates for Electric cars are free.

https://www.economist.com/china/2018/04/19/why-a-licence-plate-costs-more-than-a-car-in-shanghai

Beijing plates are also expensive but in addition, odd and even ICE license plates are only allowed on the roads on alternate days.
TAAS is the biggest revolution heading our way.
The best person to explain why TAAS will completely change the world as we know and how it will happen is Tony Seba of Stanford University.
Here he is speaking in Boulder last year.

China sure is on a steep learning curve.
Trying to achieve in 50 years what the US achieved in 150 years is very ambitious.
Such growth is bound to have hiccups along the way especially if you are trying to create a capital market system that does
not slide into predatory or crony capitalism.
They had plenty of experience of cronyism in the old communist regime.
But the quest to build a sharing economy rather than a wanton consumer society is laudable.
It wants it's citizens to be solvent so they can buy Chinese products and services.
The model where consumers aspire to individual car ownership financed by perpetual auto finance is bad for the citizenry and terrible for the environment.
The evolution of bike sharing in China has taught China a lot of lessons.
These are now being applied to the big project - car sharing and ride hailing - and it's electric.
This is from last month.

#4 snotraddict, your fact check.
Burning stuff does release carbon into the environment.
If you grow stuff and burn it, that is a cycle and the overall CO2 in the atmosphere stays the same.
However, over billions of years vast quantities of carbon on the planet have been stored underground in gas, coal and oil and as long as it stays there it is fine. Digging that up and burning it pushes all that extra carbon into our atmosphere.
Similarly, with peat bogs.
Vast quantities of methane are stored in peat bogs, in permafrost and at the bottom of the oceans.
Melting of permafrost and ocean warming releases that methane into the atmosphere.
