#34 For a country that is hated it is interesting that every US Embassy in the world has foreign people lining up to apply for travel and sanctuary in America.

Chubby boy,you are evidently young and dumb (too much pot ) and have no idea of what you speak and no experience to back it up. Do you think the US is the only country fighting the Islamic fanatics? The UK has been right there with us for the last 10 years, although as usual the US troops do the heavy lifting. The Taliban and Al-Qaeda kill many more civilians on purpose than the Allies do by accident.
From the internet,a list of the major forces in the war:

United States – 78,430
United Kingdom – 10,000

#27 If you do not respect the lessons of your past then you are likely to repeat the mistakes of that past. If you prefer to live in a "nanny" state that decides for you if you may own a weapon then fine. Free peoples decide for themselves.
I own eight hand guns ranging from a little 32cal. revolver,380, 9mm and 45 cal.semi-autos,357 and 44 mag.revolvers, two AK's , and a 12 ga.8 shot pump gun plus a rifle and not a single one of them has ever gone out and committed a crime.
If the druggies want to shoot each other I say good riddance, and they are a large part of the gun deaths here. Citizens protecting themselves from murderers and rapists account for some of the gun deaths too. Statistics can be skewed to say anything you want to hear.
I'll keep my guns, you can keep your history.

#23 "An unarmed society is an even more polite society"? More like a dead society.
You must not know your own troubled history. Hitler convinced Germans that disarming them would make them safer and that led to the murder of millions of German Jews and all who stood against him. Stalin and Mao disarmed the citizenry also before murdering all who opposed them. History speaks for itself and proves you are wrong.

Gun deaths have been declining for years now in the US since laws concerning carrying concealed weapons have been loosened. An armed society is a polite society.

http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/63452

Many of the reported deaths are related to police action and or drug dealers killing each other (which is a good thing).

#15 And then there was the infamous Rape of Nanking where atrocities committed by Japan took the lives of over 300,000 Chinese civilians in just seven weeks at the hands of the brutal and sadistic Japanese army.
And of course the hundreds of thousands of slave laborers in Indonesia that died at the hands of the Japanese.
What goes around,comes around.
Civilians get killed during wartime,it is a fact.
Even England lost about 45,000 civilians early in the war due to Germany bombing London and other cities thinking they could bomb them into submission.

On two Japanese populated islands (Saipan and Okinawa) that had recently been invaded the reactions of Japanese civilians was to actively assist the Japanese troops. There would have been much more killing if the main island was invaded.

At least the two nuclear bombs did finally end the war in the Pacific and appeased the Chinese enough so that they relented in their determination to eradicate the Japanese from the face of the earth.

#(removed comment) You must not have looked at the link at #25 . With an actual professional driver the ZR1 knocked 4 seconds off its previous time. There is no video of that run so it is considered unconfirmed. Just wait until the run is done again with race tires and a track-tuned suspension , it should knock-off another 10 seconds. What amazes me is the fact that this is a push-rod engine, not overhead cam.

"While Porsche and Nissan continue to argue over the Nissan GT-R Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7:29, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 knocked another 4 seconds off it’s already blazing fast time of 7:26.4.

Driver Jan Magnussen, a race car driver from Denmark and a GM factory driver, took the Corvette ZR1 around the Nordschleife in 7:22.4. That makes the Corvette ZR1 faster than the Ferrari Enzo, Pagani Zonda F Clubsport and Maserati MC12
. However it’s still slower than the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR which did it in 7:22.1."

After those 6 cars the list reads about the same as the one above starting with the race prepped Viper. The second car in the list is a ZR1 Corvette that wiki evidently was not aware of and then @ number 6 is another ZR1 driven by an engineer, not a race driver. Both ZR1's were running on stock street tires. Here is a link to the 7:22.4 time for the ZR1.

#21 Every report on the war while it was going on showed that the Serbs were committing atrocities on a regular basis. And how do you figure Milosevic was controlling a "private"army? He controlled the National army and Sarajevo soon became known as the city where Serb snipers continually shot down helpless civilians in the streets, including eventually over 3,500 children. I well remember the nightly news reports about murders and rapes on civilians. When the war ended you were still only 8 years old and had no idea what was going on. Every historical record on the war supports what I have said. No doubt crimes were committed by all sides in that war but the Serbs crimes seem to have been the most egregious. Some of the war criminals are still being convicted for their crimes.

Ethnic cleansing was the most prevalent crime, but rape and torture were also practiced by the Serbs.Serbian forces raped every woman and young girl they came in contact with. Looks like Obama has another apologist (and supporter in the election) in this guy from CNN. The American public is not looking for the President to show emotion, they are expecting leadership from a man who is incapable of it.
Dozens of oil-skimming ships were sailing from other countries to the Gulf to lend a hand in the clean-up but were not allowed close to within 3 miles of the US because of an old 1920's law called the "Jones Act". Some of the best oil-skimming ships in the world are just standing by,unable join in to help.
President Bush waived the Jones Act after hurricane Katrina to allow foreign aid to the people devastated by the storm, but Obama can't make a decision on it even after months of being asked to even by most of his own administration.

He asked the waiter, "What is that you just served?" The waiter replied, "Ah Senor, you have excellent taste! Those are bull's testicles from the bullfight this morning. A delicacy!"

The cowboy, undaunted, said, "What the heck, I'm on vacation, I'll have some!" The waiter replied, "I am so sorry Senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bullfight each morning. If you place your order now, we will be sure to save you this delicacy for tomorrow"

The cowboy placed the order and the next evening he was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, and inspecting the contents of his platter, he called to the waiter and said, "These are delicious, but they are much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday"

The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, "Si, Senor ... sometimes the bull wins."

#19 Koman Coulibaly negated a US goal with an offsides call that all replays have shown to be incorrect. He refuses to explain his call. On top of that there was a couple of penalty kick offences committed by the SLO team at the same time that the ref DID NOT call. I am not really a soccer fan but the ineptness and bias of this ref has put him out of these games for now by the governing body. The video shows it all plainly.....

It seems as though the quality of officiating has been pretty low so far at the World Cup. England was robbed of a goal which could (maybe) have changed the complexion of the game and the US made a game winning goal against Slovenia that was disallowed with no explanation by referee Koman Coulibaly.
The final winner just might be decided by some other bad call by a ref.

+4 176. USAnumber1 commented 14 years ago on video Remarkable space saving furniture.

The French came-up with the metric system in 1793 but it did not catch on for many years. The meter was supposed to be one tenth-millionth the length of the distance from the North Pole to the Equator when measured on a straight line running along the surface of the earth through Paris. How in hell did they come up with THAT idea?
When the English standard system of yards feet and inches was considered against the metric system by the US, the US adopted the English system. The US still has some company in this matter; Great Britain, Liberia and Burma are right there along with the United States.
Things, however, are slowly changing to metric here but it is a slow process.

There is no comparison between Chernobyl, where scores of workers died during the melt-down and thousands of others died later from the release of radioactive contaminants, and 3 Mile Island where NO deaths were attributed to the accident.

"Detailed studies of the radiological consequences of the accident have been conducted by the NRC, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (now Health and Human Services), the Department of Energy, and the State of Pa.. Several independent studies have also been conducted. Estimates are that the average dose to about 2 million people in the area was only about 1 millirem. To put this into context, exposure from a chest x?ray is about 6 millirem. Compared to the natural radioactive background dose of about 100?125 millirem per year for the area, the collective dose to the community from the accident was very small. The maximum dose to a person at the site boundary would have been less than 100 millirem."

#22 #23 I don't think that any 4x4 tearing through the woods can cause as much damage as a tornado or volcanic eruption. Just look at the damage the Mount St. Helens eruption caused in Washington state."Shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, the north face of this tall symmetrical mountain collapsed in a massive rock debris avalanche. Nearly 230 square miles of forest was blown down or buried beneath volcanic deposits. At the same time a mushroom-shaped column of ash rose thousands of feet skyward and drifted downwind, turning day into night as dark, gray ash fell over eastern Washington and beyond. The eruption lasted 9 hours, but Mount St. Helens and the surrounding landscape were dramatically changed within moments."
That landscape will never be the same.

#(removed comment) The US made 6 manned moon landings,so do you mean no one has been back since? Every nation with radar tracking equipment observed the journey there and back.
The Soviets did have their own program to land a man on the moon called Moonshot:

"The Soviet Union competed with the United States to be the first to land a man on the Moon in the 1960s. The Soviet Moonshot program ultimately consisted of two separate manned programs: a lunar flyby program using a UR-500K (Proton) / L1 (Zond) combination, and a lunar landing program using a N1 / L3 combination. Following the dual success of the American Project Apollo with the first Moon flyby of 1968 (Apollo 8) and the first Moon landing of 1969 (Apollo 11), both of the Soviet counterpart programs eventually ceased: the Proton / Zond program was cancelled in 1970, and the N1 / L3 program was cancelled de-facto in 1974 and officially in 1976. Their materials and personnel were transferred to other programs. All details of both Soviet programs were kept heavily secret until the arrival of glasnost allowed them to be published in 1990."

Here's a good ( I think ) British joke I just heard:

Camilla bought a new pair of shoes for her Royal wedding that seemed to get increasingly tighter as the day went on. That night after the festivities were finally over, she and Charles retired back to their room where Camilla flopped on the bed and said "Please remove my shoes darling,my feet are killing me."

Ever obedient, the Prince of Wales attacked her right shoe with vigor ... but it would not budge.

"Harder" yelled Camilla. "Try harder!"

Charles yelled back "I'm trying darling! But it's just so bloody tight!"

"Come on, give it all you've got" she cried.

Finally, Charles yelled "it's coming,it's coming!", and Camilla exclaimed "Oh God, that feels so good!"

In their bedroom next door, the Queen turned to Prince Phillip and said "See, I told you that with a face like that she would still be a virgin!

Meanwhile, back in the other bedroom, Charles was attempting to remove the other shoe when he cried out "Oh God, darling, this one's even tighter!"

At which point, Prince Phillip turned and said to the Queen "That's my boy, once a British Navy man, always a British Navy man!" :D

#2 Your physics teacher could take some lessons from Myth Busters,it seems.
Knowledge is power and it can save your life.Your teacher should know better.

From : http://www.tornadoproject.com/myths/myths.htm

"Myth or Misconception #4 .... Opening windows to equalize air pressure will save a roof, or even a home, from destruction by a tornado.

The idea that moving one thin pane of glass is going to protect a roof or house from one of the most violent natural forces on the planet has a certain absurdity about it. It is probably born of wishful thinking and faulty logic, stemming from the need to do something .... anything. In reality, opening windows is a dangerous and useless waste of time, and could actually be harmful to the house.

To get to the very center of a mature tornado (where the pressure may be low enough to cause some explosive effects), the windows would have to endure 100-200 mph winds in the walls of the vortex. Those winds would be laden with boards, stones, cars, trees, telephone poles, and the neighbor's roof shingles as well as wind pressure of more than 100 pounds per square foot. This barrage would blow more than enough ventilation holes in the building to allow any pressure difference to be equalized.

If the home owner opens the wrong window, air can rush in and exert pressure on the structure from the inside--like blowing air into a balloon. It is unlikely that the resident knows where the construction weak points are. In addition, the wind fields in a passing tornado are very complex and constantly changing. It is not possible to predict the strongest direction of attack. The best advice from every engineer with whom the author has ever discussed this is to leave the windows alone and get into the basement or other shelter as fast as possible. One should not think first of the house roof, but of the impact of one's death on one's family, or of one's self unnecessarily crippled or scarred for life."

#26 I would say that the info from the link you provided gives more than enough reason to wipe these birds out of North America. Thanks for supporting the cause.

"As an introduced species, European Starlings are not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Starlings are considered a nuisance species in North America. The birds, which travel in enormous flocks, often pose dangers to air travel, disrupt cattle operations, chase off native birds, and roost on city blocks. They leave behind corrosive droppings and hundreds of millions of dollars of damage every year. In 2008, U.S. government agents poisoned, shot and trapped 1.7 million starlings, more than any other nuisance species."

Any one who appreciates Eastern Bluebirds , Purple Martins , Woodpeckers , or Chickadees should do all they can to eradicate the Starling in the US.
