Here in Brighton 20+ MegaWatts come from burning rubbish, 18+ MegaWatts come from burning sewage gas. 400MW comes from the Rampion wind farm (Plate rating).
The UK land area is not the only area available for windfarms, We have our sovereign sea area as well.
There is no mention of tidal energy at all.

It's a bit complex but here goes....
The static electricity in the cloud builds to such a voltage that the air is ionized and a conductive path opens to earth.
Current flows along this path and in doing so creates a large magnetic field.
The cloud is now discharged and the current stops causing the magnetic field to collapse.
The collapse in the magnetic field induces the current back into the cloud recharging the cloud.
The path is now very ionised and the charge now flows back to earth through the channel creating a magnetic field again.
The lightning bounces up and down from the cloud.
This cycle repeats several times (about 7ish) this is why lightning flickers.
