@ braveheart2052, I don't want to sound patronizing in any way, but thank you for your service. They don't give away Purple Heart Medals, I don't know the atrocities you saw and lived through. With times the way they are I thought it would be nice for my friend to be recognized as the hero that he is to his family and shipmates. Cheers!

It is not a failed experiment to the government. $75 billion/yr is pretty awesome. If we need to change this system, it seems to me the change needs to start with our money hungry politicians.

It is terrifying and quite possibly the most satisfying, most exciting job out there. Kudos to the Euro-controllers, they have thier hands full.

Definitely one of the burliest places to skate. You have to keep your head on a swivel else get blasted by a flipping in-line skater or something.

@Thanny, Much of the initial research for runways include the direction of the wind as well as other factors such as environmental impact, noise abatement, and geographical limitations. I work as an Air Traffic Controller in Key West and the crosswind can be pretty brutal sometimes but the regional airport only has the one landing strip. Some companies, Delta and United to name a few, will not land here if the crosswind is too high. To answer your question though, it is not cost effective to adjust the direction of a runway for the constantly changing winds. Aircraft carriers do it all day though...
