The line is firmly attached to the inside of the aircraft but the other end of the static line is attached to a bag which contains the parachute, which is inside a container, attached to the parachutist. So when exiting the aircraft you 'pass' your static line to the jumpmaster and then leave... you then fall, and as you fall, the static line takes up tension, the bag is pulled out of your parachute container, the parachute then 'leaves' the bag, parachute then is free to open and you float to earth while your static line and bag stay attached to the aircraft.
