#3 Your calculations are not representative of relative cost at all. Sure you can buy the machine (Dangle-head Processor) for $300 grand used, but it is going to burn more than $500 a day in fuel and maintenance, if you are lucky, will be less than 100 grand per year. Of course this thing will do more work in an hour than 8 men could do in a day (falling, processing and stacking in a reasonable fashion). Your estimation of what a Faller (lumber jack) makes in a year is about right. They pretty much only work on steep inaccessible terrain and are felling much bigger and more valuable trees.

Reforestation is NOT exceeding deforestation. Plus it takes the better part of 40 years to get back to the size they are in this video and these are barely mature trees by the look of it. The only thing these trees are good for is paper pulp.

Also, by the looks of this timber stand, it is a European operation and this is probably the second or third cut that has been done in this area. They are very efficient with their timber harvesting practices.
