It's legit. I've seen it done as well, though my cousin took a little longer to get it done, he did the whole thing blind folded. There are actually competitions for solving 3x3, 4x4 and even bigger cubes than this one.

I think I'm pretty nit-picky tonight, but there's only ONE Solar System in the universe. There are billions, trillions even, of systems, but ours is called "The Solar System" because our star's name is Sol. This would then be "The HD10180 System."

Their, they're and there -- They are NOT the same. I can understand people who aren't native speakers getting them confused, though they get it right more often than not, but the rest of us, COME ON! English is a great language. It's got tons of imperfections in it, but when you understand it AND other languages you can gain a much greater appreciation for it. It's one of the more descriptive and creative ones out there. Show some self-respect and learn to speak it well...or at least better.

+10 6. lacquim commented 14 years ago on video Parkour Girl

Good performance. Cute girl. The video's editing could use work though, not many scenes were completely there, and almost every single one was cut short, most of them dreadfully so. This is to showcase Alison's ability, it's not to show off the music or editing.

Pointers for everyone who makes a video:

1) Make the edits as clean and smooth as possible. Your objective is to allow people to enjoy watching your video, that's how you'll get it around. MAKE IT WATCHABLE.

2) Don't cut the individual clips too short or too long. Realize that when you're staring at the same video several views in a row it's tough to decide where to make the snip. Cut them all three or four frames longer than you think you should, then go back through and watch the entire piece. Decide which of them are actually too long and which ones aren't long enough at that point. I'm not saying LEAVE them long, I'm saying:

3) Make sure you show all of the action, but not boringly so.

4) Always have someone else say "yea" or "nay" to it before you publish your work. If you get negative feedback on your newly created video, at least take it into consideration before throwing it out on the internet.

5) Take pride in your work. I don't expect cool transitions and great cinematography, just something that flows and doesn't leave me wondering what it was I just saw.

And lastly

6) Save artsy editing for an artsy video.

Sorry to be long winded, but I get tired of seeing people's talents robbed by poor video creation.

+6 7. lacquim commented 14 years ago on video towing......

Was it the steering wheel that got stuck or the driver being on the phone and was so intent on the speed that he wasn't watching where the other driver went? It looks like the tow rope stays pretty tight through the turn, so I don't know how it would have become tangled around a wheel. What would cause the steering to lock up like that if the key's in the ignition and turned?

Guys, meteors are pretty cool. The thing I don't get is why everyone makes like it's the end of the world. These things are always coming in, space is not empty, there's all sorts of stuff out there still. Ever heard of meteor showers? They happen often, as in once or twice a year as the earth moves through clouds of debris. The only one we've really got to worry about for the time being is Apophis...and it's a way out there, and it is highly unlikely that it'll strike the earth.

Personally, I think that those of you that want the health care bill as it's been drafted by the Democrats and Obama to pass, need to read it a little more closely and think about what these changes will make for us in the future. How many people here have really truly read the whole bill? I surely haven't. I've read a lot of parts of it, and what I've read I really haven't liked a whole lot at all. I welcome others' opinions, and am willing to look at things from their perspective, but this one is really bad.

I'll probably get voted down on this comment, but I wanted you to know my feelings on it. We could all use a little more inquisitiveness. Go read the bill if you want to know the truth of it.

+10 26. lacquim commented 15 years ago on video Time Warp - SawStop

#12, they've done the research and they've got the thing tuned well enough that if you use the saw to cut wood just like it's meant to be done effectively and safely, you'll not run into any problems. We've got two of these (the cabinet model) in our shop and I love them. Not only are they safer, but they run better, are more accurate and are designed better than a lot of table saws I've used. We have had to replace the cartridges in both saws a couple of times due to tired/in-attentive people putting their fingers where they shouldn't be, but I tell you what, a $60 cart and a $75 blade are worth the finger and then some.

It scares the crap out of me when the thing goes off...it's not a pretty sound.

+3 29. lacquim commented 15 years ago on video Time Warp - Tazer

#6, #5 asked if a conductive grid or metal on the target's body would allow the electricity another less resistive path to follow. Electricity always follows the path of least resistance. The Taser doesn't cause a short, it completes a circut from the battery, through the wires, and back to the taser where the electricity is being pulled to. Completing a circut is intentional while a short causes electrons to flow in a path not intended. This would be the metal path the target is wearing. While it is probable that some electrons WOULD flow through the target's body, it could render the taser ineffective as it would no longer completely incapacitate the target.

Granko's comment was just fine. He doesn't say that the 5 second reference was in this video. Your comment on the other hand is just a little too cocky. If you disagree with someone's comment, please do it with grace and respect--not hostility. Thank you.

I'd just like to say that I'm glad we got this minorly important safety issue resolved BEFORE we got a higher ratio of morons to real people into government. The last 50 years we've just been sliding on down hill with American Leadership. It stinks to recognize our faults.

Here's a question, why do stop signs not only have the red field and the bit white "STOP", but also have a white outline on 'em? What purpose does that outline serve? Granted, it's asthetically pleasing, but reason behind it? I'm interested in your thoughts on the subject.

+9 37. lacquim commented 15 years ago on video Tree Terminator

Look at it this way....you can pay 5 men $80,000/year + great benefits and an expensive mill to do this for 20 year, or you can pay one man and buy a $300,000 tool to do the job for 20 years. Even if we calculate in a $10,000/year maintenance on the machine it's a LOT less expensive. This means:

5 men * $80,000 * 20 years + $2,000/man/year in benefits = $8,200,000 + mill and machine costs

OR

1 man * $80,000 * 20 years + $2,000/man/year in benefits + $300,000 machine + $10,000/year maintenance =
$2,100,040

$8,200,000 vs. $2,100,040? Which would you pay?

If you're looking at this from the perspective of "Save the trees" good for you. It's good to conserve. US data shows that more trees are planted AND cared for than are cut down yearly. in 50 or 100 years, there'll be MORE trees than there were 50 or 100 years ago. Just chew on that a while and then tell me why it's a waste please. I'm not arguing...just presenting one side of te issue.

+12 38. lacquim commented 15 years ago on video Urban hacker

You could do it...but it was certainly staged if they did do it just like the video suggests. The problems you run into are making the box and mechanics to handle the electricity that's actually going to each room, having lights on in each room, no delay with the flourecent lights (there's always a delay in one fixture or another) and the wireless antena that works from about 1/2 mile through to the multi-level basement where the electric is most likely at among others. It would be painstaking to wire into the main breaker box, which is where you'd have to do it, where the mains come into the building and get seperated into the rooms' individual lines. Cool concept though. One other thing is, what are the odds of having a building with that many rooms and not a single one has its blinds or curtains closed or something blocking the window?

It'd be pretty cool to see this happen. Imagine writing a letter on someone's building for Valentine's Day.

+9 40. lacquim commented 15 years ago on video Police overreaction

The problem is that the "power" of the police is the power that the citizens have given. The police have as much power as we allow them to have by creating laws. The problem is that FAR to often the system doesn't work due to cops taking "justice" into their own hands. Normal procedure, yes, correct procedure, no. Not a chance. Anytime the police stop you or invade your property or home they are REQUIRED BY LAW to give reason. That comes in the form of a written statement, whether it be a ticket or warning when you're pulled over, or a warrent if they come to search for something. Far to often the rights of the citizen are trampled by people who get hot headed in the situation. Adrenaline works, but don't we pay these guys to overcome that and think clearly? While a tazer is a lot better than taking a gun to the driver and passenger, I really saw no call for it. Just cuff the guy. Even if he resists.

This is right up there with the cops dumping people out of wheelchairs to make sure that they really can't walk. I'm not being critical of all police, I've been pulled over my fair share and there are some that are polite, but authoritative, and others who are just in a perpetual bad mood.

There's my two cents. Take them as you will.
