He nailed the tree(s) to the cliff face, so that when he dived off the top, he'd see himself flying (relatively) at right angles to the trees and level with the cliff face which would for his purposes, be the ground. Hey presto! He'd get the impression of travelling in horizontal flight, through the trees. It's not too deep really is it?

Pity he didn't take into account the ground at the base of the cliff though. And so, the moral of this story is.....? Kiwis are fuckin' stupid.
