I believe that Democracy in principal has it's merits, but I am NOT naive enough to think that I live under such a veil of Democracy when politicians so often both buy their way in to office as well make decisions based more on financial or political gain rather than any benefit to the country. As the venerable and often quoted Mark Twain once said "if voting made any difference they wouldn't let us do it". Neither do I pride myself on the freedoms my countrymen and I enjoy. Again this is my personal opinion, but I believe the word pride implies a sense of satisfaction in ones own accomplishments, and since I neither fought during my nations war of independence nor had anything to do in the forming of our declaration of said independence I don't feel right in deriving any personal pride in such things. I do however, try every day to be a good person and neighbor to my fellow citizens. I pay my taxes, I obey the laws (most of them anyway), and I vote my conscience on matters that I feel warrant such action. I'd like to think that most people, both Americans and citizens of other countries, feel and do things this way. But then I really would be naive.
