That area in the far middle-west looks quite "deserted" compared to the rest of the country. Since I'm not an American could someone explain what's up with that?

#7 & #8 It's not so much the mountains (though there are mountains in that area) as it is that that mostly empty space is the state of Nevada, which is possibly the least hospitable environment in the continental U.S..
