I find it awesome that you can encrypt a text today with the use of free software, and it would be so much more secure than the Enigma Code... Funny times we live in.

It was discovered during the war and helped to end it.

For the enigma this might be true. But the modified enigma by the english was better.
And if you compare modern encryption techniques to the older ones,
you have to look at the tools used for breaking ciphers, too.
Maybe in a few years your free 1024-bit encryption might be cracked due to the enormous amount of computational power nowadays.
So you can't say the modern techniques are safer, there just safe now as a modified enigma was safe at the time.

#2: I think we cannot compare civil encryption techniques with military ones. I suppose all civil and public encryptions systems are broken by a way or another by the authorities, else extremists could organize themselves more easily (and try to make a coup).
