It won't teach you to "read Chinese", only to recognize a few individual simple characters, and as a word most of the time consists of several characters + no space between words it's a lifelong quest.

Mnemonics are great for learning asian characters. If anyone does want to learn Chinese characters ( Japanese and chinese both mean the same they just sound different spoken) then i would suggest a man called James Heisig.

Unfortunately she's teaching the traditional characters. The vast majority of Chinese haven't used them for more than 60 years now...
