#2 I may be very wrong but a couple of years ago dubai wasn't like this at all. No expensive big skyscrapes and stuff. But something happened over there and all the sudden there was a lot of money. And as a result of that many big buildings where build.
That's the story that i have in my mind. Maybe somebody else can clear this up.

#3 pretty sure no amount of money could build a city like this in just a couple of years, most of these mega projects finished by the end 2008 but it was a great city since mid 90s.
BTW if you want to come and visit dont come in July or August unless you want to regret your visit this time we usually leave

I was there last year for a couple of days and to be honest, I didnt like it there. The whole city is just about spending money. You will never get in contact with real Emirate citicens. Youll get to know only the working class which comes from Pakistan, Bangladesh etc.
F.E.: I was 5 days in Hong Kong: had to spend 250€
2 days in Dubai: 250€
The only good thing was the desert safari.
If you want to expirience a new culture this isnt the place for it
But this is only my POV

@13 it all build of the profits of oil. most buildings are owned by extremly rich oil sheiks. most state of the art buildings are like trophy's for them. the whole idea of the city came from the "beyond-rich-people"
you can find many docu's of how dubai came to be, and they tell al the same thing. Dubai is the city of the rich.
just for the fun: try to book a room online in Dubai. and laugh or cry at the prizes some hotels ask for a room.

It is scary that most of the buildings there are covered in a highly flammable thermoplastic material.
"One expert in the UAE has estimated that 70% of the high-rise buildings in Dubai have panel facade cladding made of a combustible thermoplastic core held between two sheets of aluminium.
When the panel ignites, fire spreads rapidly, racing to the top of the building and sending flaming debris hurtling to the streets below. "Like a Roman candle" is how one observer described it."
