Basejumper's parachute fails

This is the moment a base jumper who leapt off a cliff had a miracle escape after his parachute opened backwards - and he FELL 1,000FT to the ground. Daredevil Matthew Gough, 25, was travelling around the world taking part in extreme sports when he decided to go base jumping in Lake Garda, Italy. His previous 180 leaps have gone perfectly - but this time his parachute opened backwards and became twisted. He briefly floated before smashing into rocks and hurtled down the cliff face at speeds of 40mph. During the incredible incident on Matthew, who has been base jumping for three years, filmed the whole fall on his headcam.

Why the Awesome tag? Probably this:

"Gough plummeted down the cliff and collided back to Earth going roughly 40 mph. Somehow Gough not only survived the dramatic plunge, but miraculously he only had a few minor injuries to his lower extremities and was released from the hospital just hours after being admitted."

Make that should have been a LOT worse.

Extreme 'sports' eventually have extreme consequences, especially when trying to pull off stunts for which parachute equipment wasn't designed to do. I'd say he was lucky but most adrenaline junkies are dying to get right back out there & give Darwin a 2nd, 3rd and 4th chance. People are injured and killed every day in accidents for which was not their fault, they had no control over, and were careful not to take undue risks. I have exacty zero symphathy for fools who constantly tempt fate for a quick rush. Fuck em'

#1 If you look closely, at the moment where he smashes on the ground, he dodges by a few centimetres a white metal structure with spikes on it , his parachute got tangled in it. You can see it afterwards at @ 0:31 - 0:32

That makes it even more awesome :)

I agree wholeheartedly. There is absolutely no reason to do this - except for the thrill of it. But if no danger was involved, it´d be no fun. It may take a while, but the danger will find you.

It´s just like having unprotected sex just for looking how long it takes to get a std.

I like how calm everyone acts, considering someone just fell down from the sky. The waitress is cool, she's like "we have sandwiches, the square ones, kinda like this big"

But damn, that is one of the luckiest outcomes of what could have been a dreadful event, i would think one uses a huge chunk of luck quota after that one...
