Lots of people need those in order to have a decent quality and all he sees is profit. That's *!

As someone who has had to wear glasses since I was 4, I resent this entire industry. Wearing sparkly expensive trinkets because it's fashionable and some people even do it to try and look sophisticated but they're all fake. It makes me sick. And Luxottica can suck a big one.

It never ceases to amaze me how a lot of people will pay huge sums of money for "fashion"...I'm on a fixed income, I also suffer from migraines...so sunglasses are practically a necessity...so I have to buy cheap ( but decent ones ). I found some nice looking ones on Ebay, bought two pairs for £1.98 (about $3.00 ) When I was out one day a guy came up to me and offered me £50.00...for for the pair I was wearing !!

You can really tell the difference between glasses made in china to quality hand made eyewear - it seems like a lot to pay, yet there are so many different processes in making a quality pair. There is a delicacy that in handmade eyewear that you cannot acquire from injection moulded plastics.
Having said that, Luxottica does control the market.
I'm an eyewear designer, I hand make the glasses myself and it takes up to a week to finish a pair.
If you would like to check out some of my creations check out my facebook page:

I'm also building a website but its really rough and missing loads of content (but for future reference),

Peace!

Haha!
That's what you get when you combine capitalism with market economy. And the above is one of the least evils coming from it. IMO, the company is not doing anything wrong. They are playing by the book and being smart about it.
The journalist here left me a bad impression. She was trying so hard to paint the company evil. And by the first comments -- it looks like she succeeded :/

I used to wear corrective lenses when I was younger so I was constantly going back like every six months to a year to receive a different pair. This lasted till roughly...1999 I think and I never paid over 150 dollars. So obviously I haven't paid for glasses in awhile but wow this is just ridiculous.

There is another side to this story. The quality on the cheaper brands skyrocketed. I've had luxotticas cheapest models for years and the quality is the same than pre-luxottica RayBans.. The pair i have now is three years old and i wear them daily. My 90s RayBans wore out in a year.
The point of this story is not that luxottica makes most of the shades in the world. It's that they are infiltrating to medical industry causing obvious concerns. If a company owns the doctor that prescribes the very products you are selling, it's clearly wrong in everyones mind. Why is it not wrong on the judicial side, there is the problem. And this case is pretty benign, we got worse situation with big pharma and they are toying with lives, not just pair of organs.

So: dioptre = 1 / meter, inch = 0.0254 meter
Then: distance from object in inches x 0.0254 = X and 1 / X = cheap over-the-counter reading glasses to buy.
Examples: at a computer, +2.00 (~18-19 inch distance), reading a book or article on a phone or tablet, +3.00 (~13 inch distance).
Lastly: Enjoy not prematurely losing your distance vision because of chronic accommodation!
