It's a good invention until someone loses a finger..

Sorry Geekster, I think you may be confusing laziness with ingenuity. The video represents efficiency and effectiveness. He gets more done in a certain time frame than if he were swinging the axe and if it's his livelihood, he makes more money. If it isn't, he's someone I'd love to go camping with!
A quote from Billy Gates - “I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” but that only relates to computers. The guy in the video obviously spent some time making the machine and his payoff is lots of chopped wood - and being an avid camper, that is worth its weight in gold.

Nice invention but I wonder how efficient it would be with splitting wood that has knots. The wood in the video appears to have no knots and the grain is very straight.

#5 From my chopping experience, it won't make much of a difference. The knot will just "stick" to one side of the split wood and you won't have a straight cut. Knots are only a problem when making nice things from wood, not chopping it up for fire wood.

#4 combine these two methods and you have a new video!

#5 You are right, this machine has no ability to split wood that has knots or a twisted grain. He is splitting maple which is the easiest wood I know of to split, but that can be difficult too if it is a very large piece or has knots. Let's see him split some elm or gum,or even some large oak, then I will be surprised. This machine has very limited uses.

#8 Limited uses..?

How many uses do you need out of a wood cutter...?

It cuts wood better than an axe and uses less effort... What more do you want...?

#9 Limited uses as in it only works if you have all straight-grained maple, ash,or balsa wood.
I prefer an engine-driven hydraulic splitter that will split anything I put on it.

#3 I reffered to Bill Gates's quote when I talked about laziness ;) laziness often creates ingenuity.

Something like this:

It would appear obvious that the weight of the splitter outward from the fulcrum provides sufficient impetus to easily split wood with knots or twisted grain if one could but visualize the absence of the spring's support... but that likelihood might be obscured by perfunctory observations and/or conclusions imperiously made, don't you think?

#6 Your "CHOPPING" experience must be very limited to straight grained wood. This wood splitter would just bounce off a piece of hickory or elm or any knots.

All of this only works if the wood is dry enough.

At first I thought he had somehow fashioned a playground see-saw into a wood-splitter, and there was gonna be a little kid on the other end as a counter-balance.
