Although not as fast, we already had a fast airplane: the Concorde. It was killed because of its high running costs, mainly on fuel.
If this new engine is not as efficient as the (slow) jet engines we have today, it will fail inevitably.

#9 hopefully it will be, given that among the main goals of cooling is to increase the expansion ratio of the air (more expansion = more force for the same fuel).
