If the wind blows that direction so consistently (or at least often), why didn't they build the runway to match?

Why not tear it up and lay it back down so that planes land and take off into the headwind?

@Thanny, Much of the initial research for runways include the direction of the wind as well as other factors such as environmental impact, noise abatement, and geographical limitations. I work as an Air Traffic Controller in Key West and the crosswind can be pretty brutal sometimes but the regional airport only has the one landing strip. Some companies, Delta and United to name a few, will not land here if the crosswind is too high. To answer your question though, it is not cost effective to adjust the direction of a runway for the constantly changing winds. Aircraft carriers do it all day though... :P

Or even better: asphalt everything. Just like a big parking lot. Then place lights in the asphalt so that runway's can be changed dynamicly by swtiching on lights. It must be possible. Even in daylight.

#4 That's a cool idea, but ground traffic taxiing to different terminals would be a bitch.

They should just make the wheels like the wheels on shoppingcarts, then it doesnt matter how it lands! :x

These pilots have both serious skills and nerves of steel. Much respect.
