It makes sense when you think of it. It will only work for bulbs whose filament is thin enough and barely broken. The piezoelectric arc will melt the filament, which will then follow the electric arc to the other bulb and solidify connected it.

I remember that frustrated housewife in the local electronic repair shop who wanted to have her fairy lights string fixed and, when the storekeeper told her that it was not possible and that she had to buy a new one, she left and slammed the door, outraged.

Now, there's probably a business to start with that ;)
