Same problem with carbonated drinks and ice cubes in every fast food restaurants in the world. Try to remove the icecubes once, you will be left with half glass of Coke only !!!
It is also a well-known technique for bar tenders to serve more drinks with less alcohol.

A more entertaining comparison would have been between American beer and real beer.

It is like the drinks in europe (they sell at a known hamburger place) 2 x 0.5 liter is 25 cents more expensive then 3 x 0.33 liter.

For many just thinking the taller one is larger may mean they buy less than they would if they bought the shorter glass, so, thinking they're getting more they don't drink as much or get as drunk, so maybe good thing, it's still kinda crooked though

According to this document: "Most" US Beer sucks, the one from Oregon seems to be an exception.
