Can't help to think that being so public with so many people looking, this "test" is quite biased. Would like to try this in a less crowded place. Not saying all of those people would steal it of so, but i think some would.

I lost once my full of money wallet (I couldn't close it) in Poland on carwash, and i drive my way. Next customer found it, and found in my phone number, called me, waiting for me 20min and gave it to me back. :) :)

I could post a comment that explains this whole scenario quite well but it would be unwise to do so. To make it short however, just look at the scenery and the people on the street. This is why the "test" fail.

I remember once I left my wallet on a busy deli counter. My first day of a week long holiday in the Netherlands, So it's full of all my holiday expenses in cash. An hour later I get a call from my office, in Abu Dhabi, another customer found it, with the help of the manager found my IDs and business cards, made a long distance call to my office in AD, spoke to the security desk and explained. Security people called my home to get my local mobile number and called me before I had realised that it was missing. Why would people do that... I only expected the worst of them... and then they do something so nice. The incident still baffles me.

I've worn a chain connecting my wallet to by belt for over 18 years. I've never once lost my wallet, but I've found it dangling from the chain plenty of times.

For the last I would put a small paper in the wallet where I explain that I experience a lost wallet and thanked them for their participation to be recorded O:)

Im Pole. Living in UK for almost 10 years. Once i have found a wallet belonging to a Pole. ID card was in side. Found the guy 2 or 3 days later on one of polish social websites. Gave him back his wallet with id card, driving licence, bank cards and all the cash there was. :) Sadly i do not think i would go thru all the hassle if it wasnt my fellow countryman :(
