No one went to warn the incoming traffic and no one even considered to turn on the hazard lights. From Europe this looks like insanity. Even on good weather, at every major slowdown, everyone puts the hazard lights on because its known fact that any abrupt slowdown on highways can lead to deadly pileups.

Yea, i live in norway, and i know what you mean. But this is in Minnesota, which is quite far up north, so i would assume they have experience with this weather type as well? I dunno... but yea, when i was on the Autobahn, the drivers were very good at using the emergency lights when something occurred.
Sometimes it just doesn't matter, the surface just makes it impossible to do much unless you're driving with spikes (which are illegal in some places now at this time a year).

It is a fact that icing could happen on the bridges and under the bridges. You should always slow down and be careful when you get closer to such places. You should slow down with downshifting and not to brake. If you get your wheels locked and begin to slip, then it is too late. If you have time and distance then you should stop braking and try to set the car right. As much of you say that it is a pity that no one tries to warn the oncoming traffic. I guess it should be nice to get all the cars equipped with sudden brake warning. Some of the cars in Europe have this system and when you make a sudden brake then the hazard lights go on automatically.

This is what happens when you get your license at 15 with just basic instructions and only drive modern automatics. You have no sense of being involved with the act of driving and the risks that need to be managed.
