so when water freezes it expands, which would explain why a flat lake would be pushing out ice. If my theory is correct.

#7 sorry, nice thinking but wrong. What you see is a big free-floating ice sheet that the WIND pushes around. When the edge of that ice sheet hits a shore, this is what you get.
