Supersonic Freefall: Before Felix Baumgartner

Great footage of Joseph Kittenger's skydive in 1960. Kittenger rose 19 miles above the earth. Even though pressurisation in his right glove went wrong and his hand swelled to twice it's size, he continued the ascent. He said "Lord, take care of me now" and then stepped off the Excelsior III. His speed reached 614mph (988km/h). Kittinger's records for the highest ascent, highest parachute jump, and fastest velocity stood for 52 years, until they were broken in 2012 by Felix Baumgartner.

Here is the link to the original Red Bull Stratosphere project that was posted on SNOTR (over 4 years ago). This video is narrated by Joe Kittenger, it shows the footage of his jump and when he first met Felix Baumgartner in 2007.

Interesting to think that when Joe made this jump he had only sky-dived less than 30 times and he went up in an open air gondola vs Felix who had made thousands of jumps and went up in a pressurized capsule.
