Well, the described reactions are not "appropriate" or "politically correct" however they are quite natural. People are curious about the situation most of them will probably never experience. If they "adopted" e.g. car nobody would be embarassed about those questions. Of course, when talking to parents, not to the adopted kid. On the other hand I wouldn't be asking people I would expect to get "none of your business" answer from...
