My refrigerator is forty years old. It was a wedding gift.
The good ones last forever. :)

#1 that's really impressive! I agree with the observation that "old stuff" was built to last and new stuff only lasts as long as the waranty + 1 day. It's a huge waste (except that new fridges probably use a lot less energy, right?)

#2 A refrigerator is a very simple device, if you use quality parts and keep it simple they should last decades. Modern fridges are built with plastic, electronics that easily wear out, and other substandard materials. It is no secret, even the same manufacturers tell you that they don't build them to last long.
