Very cool, I always thought it was for aerodynamics, but the staggered V pattern didn't make sense for aerodynamics, this was really nicely done to explain why the V pattern is beneficial. Like he said, studying free flight birds can be very difficult.

My theory is they fly that way so that they all have forward vision of where they are going while staying as close as they can to eachother. No more complicated than that, are there benefits as well? sure, however I think the reasoning is rather simple than this entire video.
