I have seen things like this in Turkey. They were stolen to join to a marriage celebration on the table as a meal.

A quick search shows:
The theft appears to have taken place on a small farm on Kamaraj Avenue in Adyar - a large neighbourhood in south Chennai,India.
Slaughter of cattle has been illegal in Tamil Nadu - the region where Chennai is - since 1976, though consumption of beef is not banned.

So much for "sacred cows". :S
