The only thing they really know is that something bigger bit at least the tag off of the shark's dorsal fin and swallowed it. They don't know that the whole shark was eaten.
Killer whales do eat sharks though...

It didn't have to eat the shark, just eat the tag. The tag may have presented in a similar way to other symbiotic species that that are know to follow sharks and remove parasites.
