#2 i think he's sort of sanding it down to make it more smooth, give it some shine and prep it for painting. Sandpaper would still leave small bits of wood i guess?

I love watching craftmanship videos! Seeing how things are made makes me deeply appreciate their skills. The finished product doesn't show how precisely it was made, unless you've seen it being made.
