I'd love to do this but not too high as I hate heights. It would be great to float about six foot from the ground over a field for an afternoon.

Yeah, there's always one to spoil the party. Let it be me:
"Last year, MEG scanners at the universities of Glasgow, London, Oxford and Cambridge were all affected by shortages of helium. “We increasingly face regular periods of forced shut-down of our multimillion-pound facility because of these difficulties, and we are told the problem will only get worse,” said Mark Stokes, a cognitive neuroscientist at Oxford’s Centre for Human Brain Activity."
Even though helium is the second most common element on Earth, only a finite amount is available for use and this store is non-renewable. Some experts suggest supplies could be depleted by the middle of the century.

#7 I have heard that before. You would think that we would be rationing helium by now and limiting use to non-recreational purposes. Maybe taking measures to retain the limited stores that we have instead of letting people fill balloons and just letting them pop or even worse shooting the balloons. A waste to be sure. A hot air balloon would have been a much better way to achieve the same thing.

#7 Why shouldn't people attach helium balloons to their deck chairs? It's no less important than you guys at Glasgow, London, Oxford & Cambridge walking around talking in silly high pitched voices all day

Since about 75% of the world's helium production comes from the US it seems it should be the US that needs to rein in the recreational use of this noble gas in the US. Right now the US has about 9 billion cubic feet of helium stored in an underground facility in Texas. The Helium Stewardship Act became law on October 2, 2013, and should help protect our reserves from further depletion caused by it being sold too cheap as it has been in the past.
Here is an example of how easy and cheap it is to buy helium where I live...

Is there some part of this comment that some of you disagree with? Just curious....

#11 Did your comment get down voted? I found it at -1 and brought it to zero. I think maybe people are down voting because they don't know how critical helium is for modern healthcare and how our ability to assist patients could be compromised if helium supplies start to run short. All they know about helium is that it is fun to play with.
I didn't know about the Helium Stewardship Act. Thank you.
