not sure if it's because of the water or just because they made a failure point big enough on the topside crust that allowed pressure to escape by there.

#3 the crust was already incredibly thin so I don't believe that a new "failure point" does any difference. The plastics, and more importantly the water, is what caused the reaction. But it wasn't very much, so neither was the reaction.

#Admin please link to that other video where they throw a bag of trash into a volcano - *that's* a reaction worth watching!

I would like to see them dump 10 drum in. Just saying

#3 That's because the drum of water first sinks, then the water turns into vapor, which produces big bubbles. The bubbles need to push some lava to escape, which is why hot lava flows at the surface.

For the exact same reason, if you have some oil in fire in your kitchen, do NOT try to extinguish it with water. Use the proper fire extinguisher, or if it is just a pan/fryer in fire, lay a towel over to smoke it.

#3 it seems logic now, thanks :)

#7 MHO is that not only the water turns to vapor, the heat is so intense it splits the water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen, and what you see moments after the drum sinks in the lava is the hydrogen burning (and probably using the oxygen as oxidizer to help burn more intensely).

I could almost bet that if it was a large enough drum of water you'd witness an explosion instead of a burn. >:)

At least that's what is believed happened to Krakatoa.

#9 Negative, the heat is not enough to split the atoms. The water instantly (explosively) evaporates but there is no burning.

Hmmm interesting. Could this be used to release some presure from time to time? So that it doesn't explode? Or does the explosion build up deeper in it's belly?

#11 Its way deeper..vulcanos are the earth pimples..one big pocket underground..and when tectonic pressure hits or general pressure goes too high *pop* Pompeii in ashes.
But i read that they work on drilling methods to release pressure on critical pockets and try to use the pressure and heat for Thermal Powerplants..at least at some points around europe. There are way more critical magma pockets underground near big citys then most people know of..kinda scary when you read the papers.

#13 Yea like the Super Volcano under Yellowstone National Park . If that
one has another massive eruption it could blanket most of the country
in ash.Luckily there is no indication that it might blow anytime in
the next million years , but it would be ugly if it happened !
