When I look at the picture at home, it's white and gold. At work, it's clearly blue and black. Damn you, brain! :S

I'm looking at #1:48 and no matter what color is the dress in reality, the picture in the middle contains the colors brown & gray and it's not an illusion, because the colors remain the same even if you mask the shady portions of the picture. There is a clear difference between the brown color of the dress and the black color above the picture. That must have been a very bad camera or bad lighting.

Just put the picture into photoshop and use the droplet tool. Done, you'll get the exact (hex) color of it, or to be more precise; you'll get the exact color (hex) of the pixel you took a sample from! After you've gotten a good sample go to this site; http://www.color-hex.com/ to get even more useless information about the color! Have fun! :)

i'm noticing that depending on the focus I have on the dress I'm able to see it both in black with blue and white with gold.

it's really depending on what you expect to see here. Very bright white light usually lightens up the small strings on a surface. in those conditions the surface seems white and color tinted.
Expecting yellow light on the black reflecting tiles makes them look golden. same way the sea becomes black and gold during sun set: http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/17432084.jpg

A more interesting article is on the color "blue", that didn't exist in many cultures until recent times. people didn't even "see" blue. There was no word for blue in ancient Hebrew or Greek and many other languages and is not mentioned as a color in most ancient literature. One reason is thought to be that blue doesn't naturally occur in nature very often. I know you say the sky is blue, but earlier centuries they saw it as white or yellow or grey.

You can also take a tetrochromatic test to see if you can see more colors than most people.
